The Wheelchair Van Driver is a provider of safe and efficient care and transportation to non-ambulatory or disabled persons normally confined to a wheelchair or in need of other patient assist devices. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Responds to the appropriate location given, observing all traffic laws and company policy regarding vehicle operations.
  • 2. Determines the transportation needs of the patient and safely transfers the patient to the vehicle for transport.
  • 3. Safely operates Company vehicles at all times.
  • 4. Ensures that seat belts are appropriately used when driving, and that the passenger is properly seat belted.
  • 5. Places the patient in a wheelchair and secures the wheelchair in the wheelchair van.
  • 6. Transports to the patient's destination using skill and adequate caution when driving to avoid sudden motions detrimental to the patient's safety and comfort.
  • 7. Upon request, provides assistance to staff at sending and receiving facilities in preparing the patient for transport or in settling the patient after transport.
  • 8. Verbally communicates with the dispatcher as appropriate to receive assignments and to relay all information relative to the patient's transportation needs.
  • 9. Documents in writing using appropriate forms, all necessary information appropriate to the assignment, accurately and legibly.
  • 10. Collects all information using appropriate forms and obtains any signatures required for patient billing.
  • 11. Documents in writing using appropriate forms all incidents or accidents in accordance with Company policy or as requested by management.
  • 12. Helps maintain the vehicle in a safe and efficient operating condition by conducting a pre-trip vehicle checklist.
  • 13. Ensures that the vehicle is maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, inside and out.
  • 14. Ensures that all equipment is maintained in good working order and a clean and sanitary condition.
  • 15. Inventories equipment and supplies at the start of each shift and replaces as needed during a shift.
  • 16. Participates in marketing, public relations, or community service activities involving the Company and contracted communities and facilities.
  • 17. Participates in quality assurance activities and, as an experienced Handivan driver, may assist in the orientation and development of new employees.
  • 18. Obtains and maintains CPR and/or first aid certification as required.
  • 19. Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience desired.

LICENSURE

CPR and First Aid Certification.
Holds and maintains a motor vehicle operator license in the state of legal residence
Free of any criminal history or convictions that would restrict the ability to maintain motor vehicle operator licensure.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to effectively represent the Company when communicating with clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with a critical situation, should a patient emergency occur.
Knowledge of primary streets/routes in the service area, some familiarity with medical facilities.
Demonstrates mature and confident mannerisms necessary for reassuring patients.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Must have the physical ability, stamina, and motor coordination to safely assist patients in and out of wheelchairs; move wheelchairs up and down 3 or fewer stairs, up and down ramps, and over uneven terrain; operate and maintain motor vehicles and equipment. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 150 pounds.
