Our approach to R&D

The EHS Advisor will be accountable for a number of activities such as:

  • Accountable for alerting management to legislative developments in Environment, Health and Safety that could impact operations, and for ensuring all permits are current and fully compliant.
  • Manage follow-up actions from audits and inspections by corporate teams and authorities.
  • Guide, support, and actively engage with key managers and staff to ensure the site consistently maintains an audit-ready status across all R&D groups within the region.
  • Ensure EHS management system is effective and unsafe conditions in the workplace are identified and suitably controlled.
  • Ensure risk assessments performed are of appropriate scope and rigor.
  • Accountable for contributing to EHS team meetings and providing updates on compliance and performance KPIs for the responsible sites, including preparing and delivering regular reports to the R&D EHS Forums.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the EH&S advisor for R&D non-hub sites specifically for the Cambridge Massachusetts's, Branford, Connecticut and Durham, North Carolina locations.
  • Provide day-to-day support as part of a team by delivering first-line EHS advice and managing GSK's internal control framework, which includes training, emergency response, risk assessments, incident investigations, and contributions to local projects and processes.
  • Carry out pre-commissioning EHS checks of new plants and facilities as well as major plant modifications.
  • Provide specialist technical services (Chemical Safety, Machine Safety, Risk Assessment, etc.) to the R&D groups within the region.
  • Ensure compliance with Management Monitoring and Independent Business Monitoring Programs in collaboration with the broader R&D EHS team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Chemistry or Biology, Engineering, Occupational Safety or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience managing Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) programs, including compliance with OSHA and US federal/state regulations.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly to satellite sites.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
  • MS Degree in related field.
  • Experience with environmental permitting, air emissions, wastewater or hazardous waste programs.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry such as pharmaceuticals, biotech, or manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with EHS management systems and continuous improvement tools.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and deliver practical solutions in a matrix environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS software tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

* If you are based in Cambridge, MA; Waltham, MA; Rockville, MD; or San Francisco, CA, the annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges $100,650 to $167,750.

The US salary ranges take into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate's skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
