The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Computational Sciences

Department Summary

The Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE) builds AI and data platforms that accelerate scientific discovery across Genentech Research and Early Development. Our teams partner closely with scientists to transform complex biomedical data into scalable, reusable capabilities that enable insight generation and data-driven decision-making. The Data & Digital Catalysts group within the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence is a diverse, curious, and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering, and science. We are dedicated to advancing our technical excellence by partnering with informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision-making. Our goal is to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find, and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that make every data point count.

This internship supports emerging AI search and insights capabilities that help scientists explore diverse biomedical data in more intuitive and meaningful ways.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, on-site (hybrid possible depending on team alignment).

The Opportunity

As an AI/ML Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the prototyping of a multimodal semantic search system that enables scientists to retrieve biomedical data based on meaning rather than metadata. You will work alongside experienced engineers and scientists on a well-scoped, hands-on project with real-world impact.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implementing machine-learning-based embedding pipelines

  • Supporting vector-based semantic search across diverse data types

  • Building simple APIs to enable search and retrieval workflows

  • Evaluating retrieval quality and system behavior

  • Presenting a working prototype and technical summary at internship close

Program Highlights:

  • Intensive 12-weeks / 6 months / 12 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
