THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's District 8-0 Office is seeking a motivated college student to join the District Permit Office as a 2026 summer intern! DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The intern at the District Permit Office will play a crucial role in reviewing plans related to driveways, utilities, and curbs within state highway right-of-way. Responsibilities include conducting field inspections to ensure compliance, assisting in the preparation of reports and graphics, collecting traffic data, and maintaining communication with applicants to guarantee that projects adhere to engineering standards. The position frequently utilizes GIS technologies for both plan review and field data collection, providing civil and traffic engineering students with valuable insights into the transportation project life cycle. Additionally, this role offers an opportunity to gain essential paraprofessional experience across various fields, including accounting, fine arts, humanities, journalism, public administration, and social sciences, while working closely with experienced professionals in a hands-on environment. Internship opportunities associated with this posting will be for Engineering District 8 which consists of Adams, Franklin, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship that will run from May 2026 through August 2026
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours will vary based on position
  • Travel may be required
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled or intending to enroll full-time or part-time in a two-year degree, bachelor's degree, or advanced degree program.
  • Must be a Pennsylvania resident or currently enrolled at a Pennsylvania college or university.
  • In good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must attach a current unofficial transcript or proof of enrollment to on-line application.

Additional Requirements:
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
