The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Structures (OOS) is currently recruiting for a Shop Drawing Reviewer (Transportation Engineering Technician V) in Baltimore City. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitments conducted for this job classification.

Nature of Work: This position serves as the principal reviewer for the Office of Structures (OOS), the Office of Highway Development, and SHA District projects involving major highway structures, including bridges, culverts, and retaining walls. This is a senior technical level of work, performing a variety of engineering and engineering support tasks. Specific duties include providing administrative and engineering services related to the receipt, review, cataloging, distribution, and storage of shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, and other related detailed plans, processes, and materials. The Shop Drawing Reviewer assists the OOS Shop Drawing section in a number of assignments, including but not limited to the distribution of red line revisions, project advertisements, and other related responsibilities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective Qualification: Three (3) years of the required eight-year experience must include reviewing or producing shop drawings, contract documents for highway bridge or small structure projects, or working on highway bridge projects as a construction project manager, field office manager, project design engineer, or bridge construction inspector with demonstrated computer proficiency.

*A Selective Qualification is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective Qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).

Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • Expert knowledge and experience in highway bridge construction projects, including solving technical problems and developing process-improvement techniques.
  • Expert knowledge and experience in reviewing and/or producing shop drawings, as well as reviewing and/or producing contract documents for highway bridge and small-structure projects.
  • Expert experience as a construction project manager, field office manager, project design engineer, or bridge construction inspector, with strong computer proficiency on complex highway bridge construction projects.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent internal and external customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland
