Department Overview

Our clinical care teams are committed to comprehensive, coordinated, always improving, and innovative patient care.

At our UC Davis teaching center - an NCQA-certified Patient-Centered Medical Home - all personnel - residents, faculty, staff - are trained and engage in rapid cycle clinical quality improvement efforts. These are aimed at identifying and addressing process and other problems that undermine patient care quality, safety, and experience or provider and staff experience and wellness.

Residents and faculty also participate in cutting edge, team-based care including innovations such as integrated on-site mental health care at our partner Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC).

Our physicians collaborate with pharmacists, behavioralists, nutritionists, and others in providing cross-disciplinary care.

We admit our own patients to UC Davis Medical Center for medical and obstetrics care. We coordinate care within and between health systems using direct communication and an electronic health record that has access to many outside health systems.

Our care teams are focused on caring for the underserved by:
Longitudinal primary care of Medi-Cal patients in our UCD teaching center and of Medi-Cal and other under- or uninsured patients in several partner Federally Qualified Health Centers, provided by our faculty and residents.
Care of numerous Medi-Cal and uninsured patients on our hospital inpatient service.

Our teams engage in close and and productive collaborations with other departments at the medical center and with partners in the community. Examples include:
-Shared coverage of our UCD family medicine inpatient service between our department's teaching faculty and the UCD hospitalist group. This arrangement offers our residents greater supervision, urgent backup, and opportunities for advanced inpatient care and procedural training.
-Our joint Family Medicine/Obstetrics program. Three of our faculty are graduates of this program, and work closely with perinatologists in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This allows our practice to provide care for more complex OB patients than is typical for a family medicine program, offering unique training opportunities for our residents.

These are just two of many examples of cross-departmental collaborations. We are not an opposed program simply because we happen to be at an academic health center.
