The Supervisor, Trust Tax provides timely and accurate tax services for Trust and Asset Management through supervising tax filing requirements, and being a tax law and accounting resource. Generally, works with highly complex fiduciary accounts and provides technical assistance to less experienced staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares, supervises preparation, and reviews complex tax returns and other filing requirements.
- Reviews income and expense postings for accuracy and determines their proper tax character.
- Reallocates mutual fund income among the various types of taxable and nontaxable income.
- Supervises calculation of quarterly estimated tax payments for all fiduciary accounts. Reviews and prepares tax return extension forms.
- Reviews and responds to IRS notices and correspondences in a timely manner and ensures a resolution of the issue.
- Reviews and interprets relevant tax laws. Researches and reviews research of Trust, estate and nonprofit tax law issues, applying research results, and writing tax memoranda.
- Recognizes tax related issues on all personal Trust accounts.
- Properly addresses special issues of deceased individuals and reviews preparation of date of death valuation reports for basis step-up.
- Maps data from the Trust accounting system to the Trust tax preparation system.
- Uses knowledge of Trust accounting and tax systems to ensure proper account coding.
- Provides advice and guidance to relationship managers and administrators on personal Trust accounts.
- Uses understanding of Trust tax and Financial Accounting rules to perform financial analysis and solve accounting problems as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of a team of associates, carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws; Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training associates; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding associates and enforcing policy and procedure; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor's Degree preferably in Business, Finance, or Accounting.
- 5+ years of tax accounting experience required preferably in Trust Administration or related field. 7+ years of related experience preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
- Licensed Certified Public Accountant Preferred.
- Thorough understanding of Trust Tax and Financial Accounting Rules as well as the ability to apply these principles in order to perform financial analyses and to solve accounting problems required.
- Must have advanced and current knowledge of federal tax laws, regulations and advisories.
- Advanced knowledge of Trust products and administration.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to travel if required to perform the essential job functions.
- Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines.
- Ability to operate related equipment to perform the essential job functions.
- Ability to read and interpret a document if required to perform the essential job functions.
- Ability to lift/move/carry approximately 10 pounds if required to perform the essential job functions. If the employee is unable to lift/move/carry this weight and can be accommodated without causing the department/division an "undue hardship" then the employee must be accommodated; hence omitting lifting/moving/carrying as a physical requirement.
