The Position

We're hiring a General Maintenance professional to keep the Portland International Airport running smoothly!

We're looking for a skilled laborer or operator who is proficient in the use of various heavy equipment and/or small tools to complete projects. This person will also have experience with maintaining asphalt and concrete paved surfaces, including snow removal and material applications. Primary responsibilities include maintenance of paved surfaces, pavement markings, drainage systems, right of way maintenance, fence repairs and installation.

Competitive candidates will have a self-motivated and proactive attitude, aptitude to operate all tools and equipment in the execution of their duties, and willingness to learn new processes and procedures. Experience in team-based organizations is a plus, must be able to work alone and make sound decisions under pressure. Low turnover, consistent work schedule, and all the necessary tools are provided. Preferred qualifications include:
  • Heavy equipment operation (excavator, loader, motor grader, dozer up to 50k lbs.)
  • Pavement Markings (Long line, stencil, painted and durable markings)
  • Asphalt placement (paver top hand, screed, roller operator)
  • Vocational truck (Sewer or Vactor, Heavy Haul, Solo & Pup end-dump, side/belly/etc.)

Note: This is a union represented position; shifts are bid based on seniority. The successful candidate must be available to work any shift that is needing to be filled.

Essential Job Duties

  • Operates various heavy equipment and small tools relative to maintenance, repair and minor construction of:
    • Asphalt and concrete paved surfaces (runways, taxiways, aprons, parking lots, and roadways).
    • Pavement markings (traffic paint, thermoplastic, plural component markings).
    • Drainage systems (pipe and structure cleaning and repair).
    • Field Maintenance (mowing, weed control, grading and rut repair).
    • Security fence and Gate maintenance and installation
    • Regulatory Sign installation and maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned by PDX Management, including snow removal (equipment and material application).

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Experience or training equivalent to five (5) years of work experience as a heavy equipment operator in civil construction or maintenance operation.
  • Experience in the following is desired:
    • Heavy equipment and machinery operations;
    • Carpentry, painting, fencing, and sign repairs;
    • Asphalt and concrete pavement repairs; and
    • Snowplow, snow blower, sander, de-icer truck operation
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing heavy labor.
  • Maintain a valid state driver's license is required.
    • Class A commercial driver's license at time of hire is preferred (with air brake, tanker, and combination endorsements); or the ability to obtain one within the probationary period is required. All CDL training costs and licensing fees will be paid for by the Port of Portland.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain clearance of a comprehensive Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment for a PDX Security Badge, are required.
Demonstrated Skills and Knowledge:
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with others.
  • Read instructions and write legibly.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Operate heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Perform carpentry, painting, fencing and sign repairs.
  • Capably drive and/or operate equipment in inclement weather, e.g., snow, ice, etc.
  • Work outdoors in year-round weather conditions.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and for being inclusive.
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Work with a minimum of supervision and make sound decisions in the absence of specific direction.
  • Focuses on safety improvements and complies with safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Proven team player that shows the utmost respect for others.

Supplemental and Selection Information

Selection Process (tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of February 18, 2026.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule oral panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step approximately as soon as possible.
