Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Position Summary
The Animal Technician supports biomedical research operations by providing daily animal care, husbandry, sanitation, and health monitoring within a regulated laboratory environment. This role ensures compliance with institutional, federal, and regulatory standards while maintaining accurate documentation and supporting veterinary and research staff.

Scope of Duties

  • Perform daily animal care and husbandry for laboratory animals.
  • Maintain animal rooms, including sanitation and disinfection procedures.
  • Monitor and report animal health concerns to veterinary and research personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and legible records of animal status and care activities.
  • Operate cage washers, autoclaves, and other sanitation equipment.
  • Support regulatory compliance standards and facility protocols.
  • Utilize computer systems for documentation, email communication, barcode scanning, electronic health surveillance reporting, and timesheet submission.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation equipment experience.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and housing requirements for multiple laboratory species used in biomedical research.
  • Ability to recognize and report animal health concerns and compliance issues.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning agents, disinfectants, cage washers, and sterilization equipment (autoclaves).
  • Familiarity with federal and regulatory agency guidelines governing laboratory animal care.
  • Basic computer proficiency (email, scanning systems, electronic reporting tools).
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting animal health and compliance matters.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach overhead, and walk on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to push/pull equipment and lift up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including protective clothing, gloves, safety shoes, goggles, face masks, and respirators (as assigned).
  • Must adhere strictly to facility work rules (e.g., no eating/drinking in animal areas, no smoking on campus).
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS) certification and one year of animal care experience

OR

  • High school diploma/GED with two years of relevant animal care experience

OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating competency in laboratory animal care.
Schedule:
  • Monday-Friday | 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (Day Shift, 5x8-Hour).
