What to Expect

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated laboratory engineer to support quality control testing and test method development for the Cell Manufacturing Quality Analytical Lab. The lab performs routine materials quality testing as well as supports investigative testing and failure analysis for our cutting-edge Tesla battery cell manufacturing program. In this role you will work closely with lab technicians under the guidance of lab manager to perform material analysis with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced, and incredibly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join a highly motivated and capable team.


What You'll Do
  • Work with a team of materials scientists, engineers, chemists, and technicians performing routine quality testing in a 24x7 cell manufacturing quality analytical laboratory
  • Provide advanced technical guidance to lab technicians for a variety of routine tests for battery cell materials following established procedures including chemical and physical properties of raw materials, quantitative compositional analysis using chromatography and spectroscopy, mechanical properties testing, powder properties such as rheometry, density, and particle size distribution, moisture testing for powders, electrodes, and other cell parts, and technical cleanliness testing and metallic contamination analysis
  • Work with cross-functional teams to understand lab testing needs and collaborate to design investigative experiments
  • Lead test method development and optimization to create associated Manufacturing Instructions and documentation
  • Train the lab team to operate new equipment, perform new tests, and analyze data
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as required and works with vendors to install, repair, and calibrate equipment
  • Support the company's mission, vision, values and goals in performance of daily activities

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering field (i.e., Chemistry or Metallurgy) or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years' experience working in a quality or chemical analysis laboratory
  • Previous experience with installing, operating, troubleshooting, and conducting data analysis for various analytical lab techniques: powder rheometry, laser diffraction particle size analysis, KF moisture analysis, ion chromatography, GC, NMR, FTIR, ICP-OES, acid-base titration, scanning electron microscopy, TGA/DSC, and ISO cleanliness testing with expert level knowledge in two or more areas
  • Able to work both independently and in a collaborative project-focused environment, be prompt and dependable, and provide excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable working with chemicals and hazardous materials in a laboratory environment
  • Be both capable and willing to perform all the various manual tasks involved with lab work, such as safely moving heavy objects, moving large pallets with a pallet jack, handling incoming materials, etc.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with exceptional documentation, organization, and data analysis skills with a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
