What to Expect

The Tesla AI Hardware team is at the forefront of revolutionizing artificial intelligence through cutting-edge hardware innovation. Comprising brilliant engineers and visionaries, the team designs and develops advanced AI chips tailored to accelerate Tesla's machine learning capabilities. Their work powers the neural networks behind Full Self-Driving (FSD), and Tesla humanoid robot, Optimus, pushing the boundaries of computational efficiency and performance. By creating custom silicon and optimized architectures, the team ensures Tesla remains a leader in AI-driven automotive and energy solutions, shaping a future where intelligent machines enhance human life.

Tesla's AI Hardware team is looking for a highly motivated IC Package Mechanical Engineer who will be part of an IC packaging team responsible for delivering simulation technologies for Tesla's AI chip programs. This role involves thermal-mechanical simulation for IC package and system as well as driving material characterizations, data analysis, and development of new material modeling methods to advance material behavior and failure prediction capabilities. A successful candidate will have a strong background in solid mechanics and be able to thrive in a highly dynamic environment.

What You'll Do
  • Contribute to larger-scale package simulations by providing characterized material data, enhancing predictions of failures, warpages, and overall product performance, with a focus on iterative improvements to modeling accuracy
  • Conduct material characterization tests using specialized equipment, including Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), Universal Testing Machines (UTM) with temperature chambers, and projection Moire systems for warpage and Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) measurements, ensuring accurate data collection for product reliability assessments
  • Design, conduct, and analyze tests to identify stress limits of materials across failure modes
  • Apply curve-fitting techniques to develop new material models suitable for integration into Finite Element Analysis
  • Design and perform custom tests involving Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems and instrumentation to collect various types of data across multiple channels, adhering to precise protocols for high-fidelity results
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to interpret results, generate reports, and recommend material optimizations
  • Assist in lab maintenance & operations, optimizing test setups for efficiency, and exploring innovative testing methodologies to support ongoing projects

What You'll Bring
  • Master's Degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • Excellent engineering problem solving skills with strong physics/fundamentals and excellent project management skills
  • Must have deep understanding and knowledge of solid mechanics fundamentals
  • Strong experience performing material characterizations
  • Strong experience in mechanical prototyping design, manufacturing, and hands-on assemblies
  • Strong experience instrumenting & conducting dynamic tests
  • Strong experience of working with internal and external x-functional teams
