Position Summary
The Director of Financial Operations & Budgeting for the Physicians' Organization (PO) oversees daily operations of the PO Finance department, focusing on initiatives that enhance financial performance across the PO and Foundations. This role partners with PO and Foundation leadership on monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, as well as budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of new business opportunities. The Director oversees Treasury activities and investment accounting and guides monthly close and budgeting, including financial reporting, variance analysis, and benchmarking to support senior management in evaluating results and identifying risks and opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the Accounting Manager and Financial Analysts supporting Foundation accounting and reporting, including review of analyst work and PO/Foundation variance analyses.
- Analyze salary, expense, and revenue trends; produce variance reporting; assist with recruiting, training, supervision, and evaluation of analysts.
- Partner with PO and Foundation departments to develop revenue inputs (volume, RVUs, statistics, payor mix, gross/net revenue) for the budget cycle; prepare schedules for the budget team.
- Oversee the Budgeting and Planning system, including monthly data validation into the Oracle planning application; manage annual planning and the five-year rolling forecast with Hospital and Foundations.
- Review monthly financial results and prepare operational statistical reports; mentor analysts on month-end reporting packages.
- Oversee the PO Treasury team, including the Budget and Investment Manager and analysts responsible for pooled investment and group trust funds; align with BCH Investment Office policies and oversee annual audits.
- Partner with Foundation leadership on service line reporting and operational P&Ls; direct ad hoc financial analyses.
- Apply GAAP to complex accounting transactions.
Oversee monthly close presentations for Foundations and provide technical accounting guidance. - Direct the external audit process and coordinate audited financial statements and disclosures.
- Support PO and Foundation senior management with ad hoc requests.
- Provide leadership to PO Finance staff through coaching, feedback, delegation, and change management.
Required Qualifications
- BA in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 10-15 years of healthcare financial management, accounting, and budgeting experience.
- Public accounting or financial leadership experience within a large academic medical center preferred.
- Strong project management and leadership skills with ability to manage multiple initiatives and track progress.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to operate in ambiguity.
- Strong knowledge of budgeting and planning, treasury, back-office accounting, and healthcare financial operations.
- Ability to manage staff and influence peer leaders; skilled at mediating conflicting viewpoints.
- Ability to address complex, cross-functional financial and revenue issues.
- Outstanding collaboration, communication, and presentation skills.
- Proven success in a complex matrix organization.
- Demonstrated ability to lead change, set priorities, delegate effectively, and make timely decisions.
The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
