Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Location: Charles City, Iowa

Internship Summary:

An Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Intern is desired to support the EHS team members and colleagues in Charles City, IA. The EHS Intern will prepare for inspections, evaluate inventory, work with waste assessments, and assist in administrative duties.

Internship Job Duties:

The intern will impact the site safety by

  • Creating/updating maps and signage related to:
    • Confined Space/Permit Required Confined Space Signage - map development.
    • Emergency Exit signage
    • AED/MERT bag signage
    • Emergency Shelter/Evacuation Maps/signage
    • Emergency Eyewash/Shower map development
  • Conduct and update risk assessments, recognize/anticipate hazards, evaluate data and interpret results.
  • Monitor area/personnel exposure for specific chemicals focusing on Spor-Klenz.
  • Learn about waste processing and disposal regulations associated with the new waste processing system installed to replace the incinerator.
  • Review most recent QC waste assessment and determine the impact of the new waste processing system installed.
  • Learn the regulatory requirements of maintaining emergency equipment and how to properly inspect for deficiencies.
  • Evaluate inventory of fall protection equipment and develop an inspection schedule.
  • Work with the EMU team to develop an inventory of all fire extinguishers/Emergency eyewash-showers and develop an inventory tracking method to ensure required monthly inspections are completed.
  • File Organization/EHS File Archives reorganization.
  • Emergency Radio upgrade/ procedure update
  • 5S Outfall buildings and Waste Accumulation areas
  • Fall protection inspection program/Ensure inspection is complete for 2025.
  • Sustainability Tracking - develop an efficient tracking mechanism for waste tracking which is complex due to corporate definitions of categorizing waste types.
  • Waste management streamline.
  • Ladder inspection programs.
  • Opportunities for environmental and industrial hygiene sampling as well as evaluation of data.
  • Asphyxiant risk assessments - collection of data and details to input into a tool and follow up with any required signage based on the outcome of the tool calculation.
  • Assemble a team lead binder for emergency safety and health related issues.

Internship Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in a STEM program, preferably Chemistry, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, or Occupational Health with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Teams.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and multitask with deadlines.
  • At least 18 years of age and authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Successfully pass a background check and drug screen.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach above shoulder level, bend/stoop, kneel, push/pull, and handle/grip frequently.
  • Must be able to work scheduled 40 hours.
  • Ability to lift to 50lbs.
  • Regular reaching, bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • Repetitive motion and substantial movement of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

The following hourly pay rates reflect the anticipated base pay for this position:

If the selected candidate is a student pursuing an Associate-level degree: $16.00 per hour

If the selected candidate is a student pursuing an Undergraduate-level degree: $22.00 per hour

If the selected candidate is a student pursing a Graduate-level degree: $32.50 per hour

If the selected candidate is a student pursuing a Doctorate-level degree: $36.00 per hour

The following hourly pay rates reflect the anticipated base pay for this position if a selected candidate were to be located in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois (Chicago area), Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington (Seattle area):

Student pursuing an Associate-level degree: $17.00 per hour

Student pursuing an Undergraduate-level degree: $24.20 per hour

Student pursing a Graduate-level degree: $36.40 per hour

Student pursuing a Doctorate-level degree: $40.30 per hour
