Position Summary

The Coordinator of Academic Advising supports the effective delivery of advising services by coordinating daily operations, maintaining advising workflows, and promoting consistency and quality across the Advising team. The role supports onboarding, training, and adoption of advising systems and best practices while collaborating with internal partners to ensure alignment of advising resources and processes.

The Coordinator maintains a student caseload, provides advanced advising support, and models effective advising practices. The position analyzes student data to inform interventions, supports student success initiatives, and contributes to continuous improvement efforts that strengthen retention, completion, and the overall student experience.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate advising coverage for walk-ins and appointments during peak periods
  • Support implementation of new advising initiatives and changes in procedure
  • Maintain and update advising workflows and standard operating procedures
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Curriculum, Articulation, and Transfer to ensure transfer guides and transfer institution resources remain current.
  • Advise and support students navigating the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) process, including academic planning, policy interpretation, and referral to appropriate resources
  • Learn departmental frameworks and processes, model their use, evaluate the work of the advising team to ensure adherence to these standards, and train the team as needed to address areas for growth
  • Identify common advising gaps and bring them forward for discussion or training
  • Coordinate onboarding for new advisors
  • Maintain training materials, reference guides, and advising resources
  • Facilitate ongoing skill-building sessions or refreshers
  • Support advisors in adopting systems, advising technology, tools, and best practices
  • Coordinate with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs on advising-related matters
  • Communicate updates, deadlines, and changes to the advising team
  • Handle more complex advising cases when needed
  • Model best practices for advising appointments
  • Serve as an academic advisor with a student caseload
  • Analyze and assess student completion data. Leverage data to create meaningful student interventions and provide recommendations for process improvements.
  • Coordinate, implement, and assess student success campaigns based on data and feedback.
  • Advise students individually and in group sessions using prescriptive, developmental, and intrusive relationships to monitor student progress toward established educational goals.
  • Developappropriateeducationplanstoestablishacademicandcareergoals,andadvisestudentson selection of courses
  • Conduct outreach to students (phone calls, emails, drop-in advising) to support the college's retention efforts.
  • Assist with the facilitation of new student orientation programming by presenting college information and advising students
  • Participate in college meetings and committees as assigned.
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience serving a diverse student population
  • Two years of academic advising or student support services experience; or Graduate level coursework in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Advising or related field

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • 3+ years of academic advising or student services experience

Skills and Specifications:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to learn technological applications and grow with the technology and philosophical directions implemented by the College
  • Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills necessary to collaborate and work effectively with faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse employee and student population
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, plan and organize self and others
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Understanding of and demonstrated experience with data-driven decision-making for developing and refining processes and services
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to efficiently assist students through decision-making process of choosing and enrolling at MCC
  • Strong understanding of higher education processes and the ability to work with other areas of the College
  • Ability to manage both with the strategic direction (big picture) and detailed day-to-day operations
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, sensitivity to change, and responsiveness to evolving goals, priorities, and needs
  • Ability to work independently, yet with a strong team orientation
  • Ability to assist with event setup, including moving and arranging tables, and lifting boxes of presentation materials
