HJF is seeking a Staff Research Nurse who coordinates the activities associated with treating patients for clinical trials. Assures accurate documentation is maintained, and all governing regulations are in compliance. This position is the first of two Research Nurse levels.

This position required U.S. Citizenship and an active Registered Nurse license in the state of Maryland.

This position will be in support of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and Uniformed Services University's (USU) Department of Surgery - Limb Optimization and Osseointegration Program (LOOP)

  • Serve as the clinical subject matter expert (SME) for Limb Osseointegration and bone health research protocols, ensuring accurate implementation of study procedures, regulatory compliance (IRB/FDA), and alignment with orthopaedic surgical workflows and implant surveillance requirements.

  • Provide clinical oversight and operational ownership of Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) activities, ensuring accurate eligibility review, informed consent processes, protocol adherence, data integrity, and timely execution of study milestones.

  • Educate patients and families regarding study purpose, surgical procedures, longitudinal follow-up requirements, patient rights and responsibilities, and their roles within the protocol; provide documentation confirming study participation as needed.

  • Coordinate research-related care and study activities across the surgical continuum, serving as liaison between patients, orthopaedic surgeons, prosthetists, rehabilitation teams, and investigators to schedule visits, imaging, laboratory testing, and administration of patient-reported outcome surveys and registry instruments.

  • Oversee protocol-specific data collection and documentation in medical and research records; ensure appropriate follow-up, escalate significant findings to the PI or surgical team, and support monitoring visits, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness.

  • May perform other duties as assigned as directed by supervisor and team operations.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Active RN license in the state of Maryland required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical research principles, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP), IRB requirements, informed consent standards, and FDA regulations applicable to device trials and implant surveillance.

  • Knowledge of orthopaedic surgical workflows, post-operative care coordination, and longitudinal follow-up processes.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, electronic medical records (EMR), and clinical documentation standards.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA, patient privacy protections, and research compliance requirements.

  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance required.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to maintain visual acuity sufficient to review medical records, electronic data, and specimen labeling accurately.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an Orthopedic clinic at WRNMMC.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $77,600-$100,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
