Job Overview
The R21AK Network Subject Matter Expert (SME) provides engineering, technical, and operational support for the USCG Rescue 21 Alaska (R21AK) network and associated communications infrastructure. This role supports planning, integration, sustainment, troubleshooting, and documentation for the R21AK IP network environment, including connectivity between remote sites, microwave transport interfaces, and network management/monitoring systems. The SME serves as a hands-on technical lead supporting system reliability and mission readiness, producing customer-ready technical documentation aligned to USCG C5I Service Center processes.
Responsibilities
- Provide SME-level support for the R21AK system and network, including site connectivity, IP routing/switching, and service restoration activities.
- Perform configuration, sustainment, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, radio/microwave transport interfaces, and supporting services).
- Configure and troubleshoot Cisco platforms and features commonly used in enterprise/transport networks (e.g., VLANs, trucking, routing protocols, static routing, ACLs, NAT, QoS, VRFs/VPNs as applicable).
- Interpret network diagrams and traffic flows; validate end-to-end connectivity between R21AK sites and core services.
- Provide technical assistance for site work including installation/commissioning support, troubleshooting, and validation testing (may include limited work outdoors and in remote environments).
- Support interface points to microwave systems and transport equipment, including verification of Ethernet handoffs, link status, throughput/latency considerations, and alarm interpretation.
- Keep managers and supervisors apprised of their progress, ability to work well with others, adhere to contract requirements, and comply with company policies and procedures.
- Create and maintain technical documentation such as-built network diagrams, configuration baselines, installation procedures, test plans/results, and troubleshooting guides.
- Review and correct deficiencies in technical drawings and system diagrams; ensure documentation matches field conditions and approved baselines.
- Maintain operational continuity of R21AK network services by responding quickly and professionally to outages, degradations, and customer-driven priorities.
- Execute work in compliance with contract requirements, USCG processes, and company policies, including configuration management and documentation standards.
- Maintain a "no surprises" communication posture; keep leadership informed of risks, outages, schedule impacts, and mitigation plans.
- Continuously develop technical knowledge and remain current on relevant network and transport technologies.
Job Requirements
Mandatory
- Must be a US citizen
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance
- Based in (or able to relocate to) Juneau, AK
- One of the following (or equivalent experience)
- Cisco certification (preferred): CCNA (minimum) / CCNP (highly desired),
or
- Equivalent Cisco/enterprise network experience with ability to perform independently in production environments
- Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background and drug test.
Preferred
- Completion of USCG or DOD technical A School.
- 5 years of practical experience supporting USCG/DOD computer information systems.
Working Conditions
- Work may occur in office, equipment rooms, and field environments.
- May require travel to remote sites across Alaska, including occasional extended days based on operational needs.
