Position description

Quigley Lab - Bioinformatics Specialist

UCSF School of Medicine - Urology

The Quigley lab studies advanced prostate cancer, a lethal disease with no cure. We seek a bioinformatics specialist to contribute to projects that define how resistance to targeted therapy arises, and how genomic and epigenomic alterations determine which patients will benefit from a therapy. This position is ideal for someone seeking research experience before applying to graduate or medical school. Individuals previously holding this role at our lab are now in medical school programs at Oregon Health Sciences University, Baylor University, and the Cleveland Clinic. Recent projects from our group have been published in Nature Genetics, Nature Cell Biology, and Cancer Research (Quigley Lab).

Key Responsibilities:

* Run bioinformatics pipelines on a Unix cluster to analyze clinical genomics data (methylation, DNA-seq, transcriptomics) generated from liquid and solid tumor biopsies.

* Analyze functional genomics data (CRISPR screens, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq) and work directly with experimental scientists to interpret data generated in our lab.

* Upload datasets to public repositories.

* Depending on workload and experience, develop independent research by performing investigations under the mentorship of senior lab personnel, with authorship on publications.

Required Qualifications:

* BA/BS degree in a computational discipline (or equivalent degree); or at least four years of research experience (by time of hire) to be appointed at Junior rank.

* MA/MS degree in a computational discipline; or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience (by time of hire) to be appointed at Assistant rank.

* Proficiency with Unix, command line tools, and shell scripting.

* Proficiency writing code in Python and R.

* Understanding of biostatistics at the level of an introductory college course

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

* Excellent attention to details and organization.

* Willingness and ability to learn new computational tools and methods as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

* Prior experience using a computational cluster and/or cloud computing.

* Familiarity with human genetics, cancer biology, and biostatistics.

* Prior experience using bioinformatics to study genome data

* Prior experience working directly with experimental researchers

* Candidates interested in working in the lab for at least two years are preferred.

Please apply online with a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references. Applicants' CV must list pending qualifications.
