Position Overview

Primary Purpose of the Position
A significant result of the nursing shortage is the limited number of qualified nurse educators. To meet instructional needs, adjunct faculty are integral to the curriculum and faculty structure in the Division of Nursing ( DON). Without adjunct faculty, the DON would not be able to meet the instructional needs of the nursing program. Adjunct faculty positions provide DON with an opportunity to hire experienced nurse educators, clinicians, and practitioners to help meet the division's mission, vision, and objectives. Adjunct faculty focus principally on excellence in instruction and engagement. In addition to their instructional responsibilities in the classroom, clinical, and/or online environments, adjunct faculty provide clinical and practicum supervision of nursing students and collaborate with healthcare agencies, professional organizations, and other constituencies to develop professional relationships. Adjunct faculty are critical to the implementation of the curriculum, instruction, and supervision of students and success in meeting learning outcomes. Adjunct faculty coaches and mentor students during academic experience and beyond.

The Family Nurse Practitioner ( FNP) concentration prepares graduates to provide comprehensive primary care to patients across a broad range of healthcare settings, especially underserved and disadvantaged patients, and those of diverse ethnicities. The FNP curriculum includes 51 credit hours and 672 practicum hours. Full-time students complete the curriculum in two years, while part-time students complete the curriculum in three years.
FNP graduates are eligible to sit for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners ( AANP) or American Nurses Credentialing Center ( ANCC) National Family Nurse Practitioner Certification exam
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
As a leader in nursing education, the Winston-Salem State University Division of Nursing is committed to providing diverse populations with a transformative educational experience rooted in the HBCU traditions. The Division of Nursing provides excellent, accessible, and responsive programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels. Graduates are prepared to be leaders in assuring the health equity of underserved individuals and communities; providing compassionate, evidence-based, and culturally responsive care; and educating our next generation of nurses.
