Laser Operator

General Summary: Sets up and operate the Amada laser cutting machine to produce parts and products in conjunction with customer quality requirements.

Essential Functions:



  • Follow safe manufacturing and material handling practices
  • Set up and operate laser equipment to perform difficult fabrication operations on a wide range of metals and alloys for complicated subassemblies and assemblies involving coinciding requirements for high strength, pressure and aesthetics
  • Perform first piece in-process inspection of jobs as required Ensure jobs meet all requirements before leaving work center
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment as required
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Conserve resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results
  • Contribute to team effort by training others in performance of laser operation tasks as needed
  • Inspect all work prior to passing it on to the next operation
  • Document actions by completing production and quality forms


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Must be able to safety use small hand and power tools
  • Must be able to read and interpret Drawings and Bills of Material
  • Must have basic computer skills, including navigation in a Windows-based environment
  • Solid understanding of metal fabrication concepts and processes required
  • 1-2 years of prior CNC machine operation experience desirable
  • Must possess a keen sense of attention to detail
  • Must possess the ability to operate overhead cranes, handling large sheet steel
  • Must be able to use measuring tools such as tape measures and calipers
  • Must be able to determine material types and gages
  • Must possess effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Must perform all duties in conjunction with UAI and ISO requirements


Education/Experience:



  • High School diploma, GED or combination of work experience and skill development required
  • 1 year experience working in a manufacturing environment desirable
  • Prior experience or training in metal-cutting or operating laser equipment desirable


Physical Demands: (The work is classified as Medium - Heavy Physical Demand Level (PDL) by the US Dept of Labor's Dictionary of Occupational Titles) Frequencies: Occasional (1-33%); Frequent (34-66%); Continuous (67-100%)

Lifting Demands:



  • Lift up to 75 lbs on an occasional basis floor to waist
  • Lift up to 50 lbs on a frequent basis floor to chest
  • Carry up to 75 lbs on an occasional basis up to 25 feet
  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs on an occasional basis


Postural Demands:



  • Standing - continuous
  • Walking - continuous
  • Bending/stooping - frequent
  • Squatting/kneeling - frequent
  • Lifting - frequent


Miscellaneous Demands:



  • Griping, manipulation, fingering - frequent
  • Variable hand/power tool use - frequent
  • Two-person lifting tasks using assistive devices for lifting, pulling and pushing including hand trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts and hoists
