Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies at
FSU is committed to educating students about the realities of human social interaction and offers students sociological tools to address current issues and problems encountered in social institutions and organizational settings. The department serves the needs of both traditional and nontraditional students by offering undergraduate and graduate programs, including minors and a general graduate certificate program that enhance students' intellectual growth and opportunities for career advancement. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Sociology is accessible to students through distance-learning, on-campus, and military sites. Students also have the option of pursuing advanced study in sociology through our Master of Arts (M.A.) degree program. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Interdisciplinary Studies is also accessible to on-campus, online, and military students |
| Primary Purpose of the Position: |
The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Fayetteville State University invites applications for a
tenure-track assistant professor of sociology position to begin August 2026. We seek applicants with a commitment to excellence in teaching effectiveness and the ability to teach a variety of sociology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in both in-class and online settings. The area of specialization is open. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: |
- A Ph.D. in sociology is required at the time of appointment.
- All But Dissertation (ABD) close to completion will be considered.
- Strong commitment to excellence in student-centered teaching and mentorship.
- Strong commitment to working in multidisciplinary environments.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff at the university.

- Teaching expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Ability or strong potential to teach a variety of sociology courses.
- Effective teaching and instructional skills.
- Proficiency in educational technology, digital tools, and online learning management systems.

| Preferred Qualifications: |
- Ability to teach courses aligned with department and university needs
- Online and in-class teaching experience
- Experience with online course development and instruction in Canvas or other online learning management systems
- Experience in working with diverse student populations, including first-generation college students, active-duty military students, veterans, distance learners, and adult learners
- Experience with assessment and program review
