Job Summary

The experienced Start-Up Technician performs and leads start-up, commissioning, diagnostic evaluation, and functionality checks on newly installed HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems. This role works with limited supervision and uses advanced technical expertise to ensure equipment operates per engineering specifications, factory requirements, and all applicable codes. The technician collaborates with internal teams, subcontractors, vendors, and clients; provides technical leadership to less experienced technicians; and contributes to system evaluation, troubleshooting, and documentation.

Essential Duties

  • Perform full start-up and functionality checking on HVAC and electrical systems according to plans and specifications.
  • Execute commissioning tasks, including system calibration, performance verification, documentation of operating parameters, and ensuring systems meet design intent.
  • Check installed equipment for compliance with applicable city, trade, NEC, plumbing, fire, and building codes.
  • Verify proper installation, alignment, and operation of mechanical and plumbing equipment.
  • Diagnose issues across HVAC systems through testing, observation, inspection, and review of controls integration.
  • Disassemble and reassemble commercial mechanical equipment when troubleshooting or performing corrective maintenance.
  • Identify errors or omissions in engineering drawings and provide feedback or clarification to supervisors or project managers.
  • Evaluate system deficiencies and communicate improvements or corrective recommendations to engineering or project leadership.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and informal leadership to less experienced Start-Up Technicians.
  • Assist with owner training and support Commissioning Agent functional testing activities.
  • Influence subcontractors and internal partners to ensure high-quality installation and adherence to standards.
    Complete all required start-up documentation, reports, punch lists, and system performance logs.
  • Provide weekly updates on job status, system issues, required materials, and service activities.
  • Submit purchase orders, maintain tools and vehicles, and ensure adherence to safety requirements.
  • Collaborate directly with subcontractors, vendors, commissioning teams, and internal managers for system handoff and validation.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED. Vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field is preferred. Craft training is preferred.
  • EPA Certification is required.
  • VFD, VRF, OSHA 10, CPR/First Aid, and Factory Authorized certifications are preferred.
  • Required to continuously maintain registrations, professional licenses, and certifications as necessary for the role.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blue prints, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong interpersonal and people skills with good written and oral communications capability.
  • Performs as a self-managed individual.
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • Ability to understand budget activity per job.
