The Internal Communications Manager for Layton Construction is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies that inform, engage, and align employees with the organization's goals, culture, and priorities. This role partners closely with executive leadership, HR, and marketing to ensure clear, consistent, and compelling messaging across all internal channels.

This position supports communication efforts across the STO Building Group's western region, including Layton Construction, Structure Tone Southwest, and Abbott Construction. The role also leads internal communications, employee engagement initiatives, training communications, and key employee and community events.

This is an individual contributor role reporting to the VP of HR, with no direct reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

Internal Communications & Strategy

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive internal communications strategy that fosters a connected, informed, and engaged workforce across multiple offices, job sites, and functions
  • Draft, edit, and publish internal communications highlighting employee achievements, project milestones, organizational updates, and key initiatives
  • Establish editorial calendars and content governance processes
  • Advise leaders on communication best practices and messaging effectiveness
  • Partner with HR leadership to deliver communications related to benefits, organizational changes, processes, training, and tools
  • Proactively manage leadership communications and announcements, ensuring confidentiality and responsiveness
  • Collaborate with Marketing to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging across channels

Employee Engagement & Events

  • Plan, promote, and execute employee events and engagement initiatives across the western region (e.g., employee events, charitable efforts, recognition programs)
  • Partner with Marketing to develop event branding, signage, and promotional materials
  • Manage event inventory including swag, banners, and promotional items
  • Evaluate event success and ROI through feedback collection and performance tracking

Training & Development Support

  • Support planning, promotion, and coordination of employee training and development programs (e.g., Building Our Legacy, Emerging Leaders)
  • Coordinate logistics for training sessions including vendors, materials, and participant experience
  • Partner with Marketing to ensure consistent branding and communication of training initiatives

Employee Experience & Recognition

  • Manage Layton's employee recognition platform (AwardCo), including system utilization, data, budget, and promotion
  • Drive initiatives that enhance employee engagement, morale, and retention
  • Lead the Gallup Employee Engagement Survey process, including communications, participation tracking, and follow-up actions

Employer Brand & External Recognition

  • Support development of Layton's employer-of-choice brand and elevate recognition through targeted initiatives
  • Coordinate award submissions (e.g., Best Companies to Work For), including timelines, content development, and supporting materials

Analytics & Continuous Improvement

  • Establish KPIs to measure communication effectiveness and engagement
  • Track and analyze metrics (open rates, participation, feedback, survey data)
  • Continuously improve communication strategies based on insights, trends, and employee feedback

Additional Responsibilities

  • Review and enhance how Talent Acquisition leverages communications to attract talent
  • Support new hire orientation communications as needed
  • Serve as a confidential partner to HR leadership and participate in leadership discussions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Business, or related field
  • 5-8 years of professional communications experience
  • Strong writing, editing, and strategic communication skills
  • Experience with change management and employee engagement strategies
  • Strong relationship-building and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in a large, multi-site organization preferred
  • Highly organized, innovative, and comfortable working through ambiguity
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Technologically proficient, including Microsoft Office and modern communication platforms
