Position Description:

Position

The Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at the University of Iowa, one of the leading Colleges of Education in the nation, invites outstanding applicants for an academic year position as Department Executive Officer (DEO). The start date of the appointment is July 1, 2026. Candidates' particular areas of expertise may be in any of the department's programs.

Description

The Department Executive Officer is appointed by the Dean of the College of Education and reports to the Dean. The candidate must be tenured at the rank of associate or full professor. This appointment is for a period of one year and is renewable. Candidates must be currently employed at the University of Iowa (internal candidates only).

Administrative Responsibilities

The Department Executive Officer provides responsible and professional leadership which furthers the excellence of the department. The DEO manages the day-to-day operational needs of the department, including supervision of support staff, evaluating faculty, fiscal management, identification and implementation of strategic initiatives, supporting graduate and undergraduate students, collaborating on Teacher Education Program curricular issues with the Associate Dean of Educator Preparation, and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research, and service activities. The DEO will hire, supervise and mentor Associate DEOs. The DEO will represent the department and maintain positive public relations with on and off-campus entities. The DEO will serve on the College's Executive Council.

The DEO is expected to provide leadership in facilitating long-term planning for professional involvement and development of the faculty and the department, and mentor faculty in effectively meeting their responsibilities in scholarship, teaching, and service. The DEO provides leadership in the continuous improvement efforts in the College.

Academic Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to remain active in teaching and/or research, supervise doctoral research, and participate in the activities of professional organizations at the state and national level.

Salary

Commensurate with qualification and experience. A summer administrative stipend is provided and some work is expected over the months of June and July.

Appointment

Academic year appointment beginning July 1st, 2026, or a negotiated start date.

Education Requirement:

Prospective candidates must have earned a doctorate in Education or a relevant discipline.

Required Qualifications:

Currently employed at the University of Iowa (must be an internal candidate);must be tenured at the rank of associate or full professor; evidence of administrative or leadership skill and experience; evidence of a strong academic record in research, teaching; evidence of successful grant activity; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multifaceted environment with a range of students, faculty, administrators and external constituents; experience contributing to a welcoming and respectful academic environment.
