The University of Arizona's Law Library within the James E. Rogers College of Law invites you to apply to the role of Library Specialist, Collections.

The James E. Rogers College of Law prepares practice-ready lawyers and leaders through rigorous legal education, innovative programs, an emphasis on experiential training, and community engagement. In service to College of Law students, faculty, staff, alumni, public patrons, and the wider University of Arizona community, and reporting directly to the Head of Collections, the Library Specialist will support the work of the Collection and, under general guidance with assigned objectives, participate in the management of the law library's print and electronic resources throughout the entirety of their lifecycle.

In this dynamic role, you will develop and manage complex projects in collaboration with relevant library staff, university colleagues, and external stakeholders, and catalog and ensure access to resources in the law library's collection. In addition, you will promote collection resources through curated displays, blog posts, and research guides. The Library Specialist will also process archival and special collections and, in collaboration with Law Library Research, Data & Instruction, fill research requests.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the general guidance of the Head of Collections, Collection Management Librarian:

  • Participates in library collection assessment and project management to promote and ensure access to all library resources, both print and electronic, for all library patrons.
  • Physically maintains resources over the entirety of their lifecycle.
  • Evaluates resources and recommends suggestions for retention or withdrawal.
  • Organizes, maintains, and documents existing library collections and complex projects.
  • Develops and updates existing workflows, best practices, and standards.
  • Trains Law Library Fellows (G.A.s), iSchool graduate student interns, and Access Services staff on skills related to specific projects and professional development.
  • Promotes resources and collections through the unique curation of displays and authors blog posts and research guides.

Serves as the cataloging lead:

  • Performs cataloging of library resources in all formats (monographs, serials, periodicals, etc.), various languages, and mediums (print and electronic), including assessing call numbers.
  • Analyzes and updates subject headings and performs retrospective conversion of database records in accordance with national standards, following local practices and procedures, and in collaboration with University Libraries and national library associations and consortia.

Drawing upon disciplinary archival standards:

  • Serves as the Special Collections and Archive processing assistant to assess, arrange, and describe archival collections.
  • In collaboration with Law Library Research, Data & Instruction, fills archive and special collections research requests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in project management.
  • Knowledge in archives and record management.
  • Knowledge in Library Services Platform/Integrated Library System.
  • Knowledge in principles of bibliographic control and serials maintenance.
  • Knowledge in national cataloging standards (AACR2, MARC, LCSH, etc.).
  • Skills in searching for and downloading bibliographic records from OCLC.
  • Skills in archive/special collections research requests.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and other online communication and collaboration platforms.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage students on special projects.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
