THE POSITION

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is excited to welcome a diligent and committed Nuclear Safety Specialist to join the team and serve as a vital link between complex nuclear operations and public safety. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Nuclear Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for evaluating and inspecting commercial nuclear power plant operations to determine if all applicable federal and state safety requirements are in compliance. You will review industry and federal reports regarding safety or environmental impacts of nuclear facilities, and prepare memos and reports relating to the ability of nuclear facilities and systems to operate while also protecting public health and safety.


In addition, you will participate in
emergency exercises and drills at nuclear power plants to assess plant conditions during nuclear plant events or accidents. You will further provide consultation and assistance to other agency staff in the development and functioning of nuclear facility radiological emergency plans. Within this role you may also be called upon to provide public education regarding nuclear safety, emergency preparedness, and radioactive waste issues.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Travel is required.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of professional experience in nuclear systems safety analysis involving Boiling Water Reactors or Pressurized Water Reactors, and a bachelor's degree in nuclear, mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, structural or environmental engineering, or in engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid driver's license.
