Optical Systems Engineer - Optical Transmission

Molex
life insurance, parental leave
United States, California, Fremont
Apr 07, 2026

Molex possesses a rich heritage in the optical industry. We provide the highest performing and field-proven optical solutions from components, modules to integrated line-cards. We provide cutting edge wavelength management and amplifier technologies. Our comprehensive optical, mechanical, electrical and software integration capabilities enable us to serve the needs of high-density, high-bandwidth, and flexible optical networks.

Our team in Fremont is hiring an Optical System Engineer to join our optical transmission team. We develop cutting edge network components and modules, such as high speed Optical Transceivers, DWDM/WDM Filters, Optical Amplifiers, Raman Amplifiers, Dynamic Gain Equalizer (DGE) and Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS).

In this role, the Engineer will be responsible for developing optical transmission system and sub-system simulations and define inputs for system design and performing system validation. The engineer will build and manage system test beds and support customer needs throughout the development process. The main focus of the role will be development optical transition system simulations and work with colleagues in various geographic sites to develop optical network products that meet our customers needs.

What You Will Do

  • Developing system/sub-system models, conducting composite system simulations for various fiber-optic communication networks, and carrying out internal development projects for best use of Molex cutting edge optical network components and modules, such as high speed Optical Transceivers, DWDM/WDM Filters, Optical Amplifiers, Raman Amplifiers, Dynamic Gain Equalizer (DGE), Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS), etc.
  • Researching various aspects of both existing and potential future optical components including fibers to select right technique(s) suitable for modeling nonlinear propagation of optical signals with advanced modulation formats, evaluating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), optical SNR (OSNR), bit-error rate (BER), Q-factor, OSNR penalty and Q-penalty of the transmission system, and giving mitigation and components improvement recommendation on optical impairments (including filtering, chromatic dispersion, PMD, PDL, crosstalk, nonlinearities, etc.).
  • Developing system design rules, link-level optical line system control algorithm and other innovative ideas for communication systems improvements as well as directions of optical component/module further technology development.
  • Developing and maintaining optical transmission system test bed in full characterization of optical components and modules as well as system performance measurement for optimization direction.
  • Validating simulation model and keeping improvement of simulation modelling.
  • Participating development projects in system engineer role from conceptual, to development and full NPI.
  • Supporting technical discussion with customers for best use of Molex solutions and products.
  • Assessing and reviewing designs and project activities to ensure compliance with customer requirements and development guidelines.
  • Troubleshooting customer field network systems issue.
  • Providing technical support for field operations, including issue investigation, log analysis, and resolution of optical network problems.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics or related technical field
  • At least 3 years of experience combined from academia and industry in the area of simulating and modeling of system and component for optical communications
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in optical communication systems such as operating and maintaining DWDM optical networks.
  • Hands-on experience with operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of: DWDM systems (fixed and flexible grid), Coherent optical transmission systems, Optical amplification technologies (EDFA, Raman), Optical protection schemes, and Pluggable optics and transponders
  • Hands-on experience with optical test equipment for troubleshooting and validation, including OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer), OSA (Optical Spectrum Analyzer), BERT (Bit Error Rate Tester), OMA (Optical Modulation Analyzer), Real-Time Scope, DCA (Digital Communication Analyzer), and optical power meters.
  • Experience in creating simulation models for communication systems and using the models to analyze and optimize the system (e.g., signal propagation, system level modeling, amplifier and component modeling, etc.)

For this role, we anticipate paying $140,000- $190,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
