Job Title: Student Lab Assistant/Eye Call Technician Job Type: On Campus Student Employment Employment Type: Part-Time Job Description: Position is divided between daily hours in the laboratory and on call hours on nights and weekends (See Work Schedule section below for details). The bulk of the work in Spring 2026 will be on call with the opportunity for more daily work ability in Summer 2026 and beyond. Eye Call (on call) tasks include responding immediately to calls for human donor eye processing from the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, driving to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank or to University of Iowa Health Care facilities to retrieve donor ocular tissue, and processing donor tissue in the laboratory according to precise protocols in a timely fashion. Tasks for daily hours include general laboratory upkeep including washing dishes, removing full biohazard bins, inventorying supplies, retrieving supplies, etc.; and potentially sectioning, staining, imaging, and analyzing animal and human donor tissue based on ability. Work Schedule Position consists of daily hours and on call hours. On call hours are weekday evenings (5pm - 8am following day) and weekend days (8am Saturday - 8am Sunday; 8am Sunday - 8am Monday) and are coordinated and divided with two other undergraduate students to cover all on call hours every day (including university holidays). For daily hours (available in Summer 2026 and beyond) we are willing to work around class schedule but prefer availability with 2-4 hours of open time on days class schedule allows between 8am and 5pm. Additional Qualifications Interest in biological and medical sciences. Must have access to dependable personal transportation because response to pages must be immediate while on call.It is essential the applicant be flexible, detail orientated, very reliable, and able to work independently.No previous lab experience needed, will train.Basic Biological Safety (W004BO) and/or Lab Chemical Safety (W008CM) training is a positive.
