This position maintains and issues the Department's inventory of necessary parts, supplies, equipment and tools. They are also responsible for researching replacement parts, pick-up, and delivery of parts.

Schedule: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, occasional nights and weekends required

The job functions listed herein are neither exclusive nor exhaustive but are intended to be illustrative of the types of tasks the employee will most likely be expected to perform on a regular basis. The employee will be asked to perform different or additional tasks than the ones listed here, as the needs of the employer and/or the requirements of the position change.

  1. Keeps inventory of parts, supplies, equipment, and tools for entire city garage.
  2. Maintains accurate records of inventory.
  3. Picks up parts and supplies and delivers to satellite mechanic stations.
  4. Has equipment and tools maintained, repaired and/or replaced as needed; performs safety checks.
  5. Keeps stockroom & satellite mechanic stations stock areas orderly.
  6. Orders replacement parts and shops around for best prices.
  7. Assists with fuel system and fueling equipment for vehicles and equipment at two sites; monitors levels of diesel fuel and gasoline to assure availability as needed. Must be able to maintain class A/B underground fuel tank certification within one (1) year of hire.
  8. Performs general office work; answers telephones as needed while routing calls as required.
  9. Assists with snow removal operations as dispatcher with other stockroom personnel during snow operations.
  10. Processing invoices for correct payment and posting to work orders.
  11. Actively working with personnel to procure parts and supplies as needed.


  1. Graduation from high school plus elementary technical training.
  2. 1-3 years of experience in inventory control; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:
Knowledge Of:
  • Supplies, tools and materials used in the public works department
  • inventory stock control
  • standard office procedures
  • The use of standard office equipment including computers and relevant software
  • Occupational hazards and the practices/techniques used to avoid or minimize risks
  • Must be familiar and capable of using Work and Excel daily
Ability To:
  • Keep accurate records and make reports
  • Understand and carry out instructions
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Multitask and prioritize workload
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, vendors and suppliers
Skill In:
  • Organization and record-keeping
  • Oral and written communications
  • Snow removal operations
Necessary Special Requirements:
CDL class A, B and C; N (tanker) endorsement preferred but not required; valid WI drivers license; ability to complete a pre-employment post offer physical including drug test upon hire, and random drug/alcohol tests thereafter.

  • Work is performed mostly indoors; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various tools and office equipment
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, prolonged visual concentration and ability to adjust focus
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; using hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands/arms
  • The employee is occasionally required to bend, climb, balance, stoop or kneel
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to unpleasant conditions such as dim/bright lights, dust, odors, noise, vibrations, toxic agents or electrical currents
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, sometimes in excess of 50 pounds
