Overview

The Phlebotomist has the primary responsibility of assuring proper procurement of specimens for clinical testing. This may include collection, transportation, ordering, labeling and processing of specimens as well as other support duties as required or assigned.

Responsibilities

Clinical Specimen Collection & Patient Care
  • Expert Collection: Performs accurate venipuncture, micro-collection, and specialty specimen procurement (urine, stool, semen, swabs, sputum) across all patient populations.
  • Patient Verification: Adheres to strict protocols for patient identification prior to any specimen collection or EKG procedure.
  • Quality Standards: Maintains low specimen rejection rates by following established clinical procedures and verifying requirements for unfamiliar tests via the test catalog.
  • Age-Specific Care: Applies specialized communication and handling techniques for geriatric, adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients to ensure physical safety and emotional comfort.
  • Safety Compliance: Follows all health safety policies, HIPAA regulations, and environmental safety standards, including the proper disposal of sharps and biohazardous materials.
Laboratory Operations & Processing
  • Specimen Integrity: Ensures proper labeling (initials, date, time), handling (e.g., temperature control, light protection), and centrifugation according to SOPs.
  • Priority Management: Prioritizes and expedites STAT and high-priority specimens to ensure timely clinical analysis.
  • Technical Processing: Matches barcodes, aliquots samples, and distributes specimens to correct testing sites or analyzers.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conducts basic troubleshooting and routine maintenance on label printers, centrifuges, and other processing equipment.
Information Management & Documentation
  • Data Entry: Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Patient Care System (PCS) for accurate order entry, patient registration, and logging received specimens.
  • Task Oversight: Monitors pending collection lists frequently to ensure all orders are completed within the designated shift.
  • Administrative Accuracy: Manages test add-ons and cancellations following established laboratory protocols.
Communication & Professionalism
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Communicates effectively with nursing staff and providers regarding patient concerns, testing delays, or order clarifications.
  • Team Support: Assists other units with difficult procedures and contributes to a positive team environment through knowledge sharing and training new personnel.
  • Service Excellence: Maintains professional telephone etiquette and provides timely responses to patient requests, directing them to appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Inventory Management: Monitors and stocks consumable supplies, alerting appropriate personnel for reorders to maintain continuous operations.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $18.65per hour - $30.21per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
