DESCRIPTION

Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the UCSD School of Medicine with comprehensive clinical programs, extensive basic science and clinical research, and diverse educational opportunities for students, residents and fellows. The internationally renowned faculty play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as more than 300 professional, research and administrative staff who along with the department administrators interact closely with the faculty. Under the supervision of the principle investigator, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for aiding in the planning, execution and interpretation of experiments aimed at the development of new engineered cell types. Assays will use a variety of modern technologies including but not limited to CRISPR/Cas9, next generation sequencing, tagmentation, hybridization based sequence capture, and multiplex PCR.

The technician is expected to be honest, highly motivated, organized, and able to work well within a multidisciplinary team of basic scientists and physicians. The incumbent will also be asked to help with general laboratory maintenance and organization, to ensure a properly functioning research laboratory. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, or related science as typically acquired through a Bachelors degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Skill in and knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of lab equipment.

  • Experience in maintaining well-organized lab and thorough records. Basic math skills and ability to handle accounting and billing practices.

  • Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills to communicate research results and carry out collaborative projects.

  • Strong computer knowledge: Proficiency with Windows programs and knowledge of library usage with the willingness and ability to learn new hardware/software as required.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals.

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing complex solutions, culture media and reagents.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic to advanced programming and statistics knowledge.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,208 - $104,901 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.23 - $50.24

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
