This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Moores Cancer Center and remote.

DESCRIPTION

The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of just 57 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. As a consortium cancer center, it is a collaborative partnership between the UCSD: encompassing 28 departments, 6 schools (School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, Jacobs School of Engineering, School of Biological Sciences & the School of Physical Sciences), UCSD Health oncology hospitals and clinics; the basic and public health research and outreach of San Diego State University (SDSU), and the basic and translational research of the La Jolla Institute of Immunology (LJI). Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Sr. Data Analyst serves as an advanced-level analyst providing statistical, data management, and analytical leadership for cancer prevention and detection research. The incumbent collaborates with clinicians, epidemiologists, and investigators to design, implement, and interpret complex analyses using large-scale electronic health data sources, including the VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure (VINCI), the California Teacher Cohort, and other research data platforms and resources.

The incumbent independently develops and applies advanced statistical and analytic approaches to address complex research questions. Responsibilities include planning statistical components of studies, developing analytic strategies, and adapting or extending existing methodologies to meet study objectives. The position plays a key role in study design, including development of analysis plans, power and sample size estimation, and specification of analytic frameworks.

The analyst independently manages large and complex datasets; designs and implements reproducible analytic workflows; and develops systems for data organization, integration, and reporting, including development and management of research databases (e.g., REDCap). The incumbent also develops data management and data security plans and protocols for research studies and grant applications, ensuring compliance with applicable data governance and regulatory requirements.

The incumbent exercises independent judgment in selecting methods and techniques to achieve research objectives and provides expert consultation to investigators. The position contributes substantively to scientific dissemination, including drafting statistical methods and results for manuscripts and grants, generating preliminary data for proposals, and responding to reviewer comments. Works independently on projects of broad scope and complexity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of research function. Thorough knowledge of statistics, applied mathematics, biostatistics, or related quantitative field, with the ability to apply and adapt statistical methods to complex research problems.

  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Demonstrated experience independently conducting statistical analyses and developing analytic approaches for research studies.

  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation. Demonstrated experience with data analysis, computer programming and graphing complex and custom statistical programming using statistical software. Proficiency in R, SAS, SQL, or similar tools.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Proven ability to communicate complex statistical concepts and findings clearly to scientific audiences. Experience contributing to manuscripts, grants, and scientific publications.

  • Skills in project management. Strong project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently and effectively manage multiple projects.Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations. Demonstrated experience with a broad range of statistical methods, including regression modeling, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, and multivariable modeling techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience planning analyses for research studies, including development of analysis plans and power/sample size calculations. Experience developing or adapting analytic methodologies to address novel research questions.

  • Strong skills in database design, including development and management of research databases (e.g., REDCap).

  • Demonstrated experience developing data management plans, data security protocols, and data governance procedures for research studies and grant applications.

  • Strong skills in data integration, data management, and large dataset analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience with contributing statistical analyses and methods to research manuscripts and publications, as well as grants.

  • Familiarity with epidemiologic and clinical research methods, particularly in cancer prevention or outcomes research.

  • Experience working with large healthcare datasets (e.g., VA VINCI, VistA, CMS claims data).
