Position Summary: The Library Media Specialist (LMS) provides specialized services to St. Joseph Academy, assisting in the daily programming for children enrolled in SJA School and Childcare. The LMS maintains school classroom standards, developing and implementing specialized programming. School programming is implemented according to standards set forth by Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP) and federal guidelines. The LMS develops student literacy through the administration of the library. The LMS oversees the selection, organization, utilization and maintenance of library resources. The LMS is responsible for the scheduling, execution and reporting of MAP and Forward assessments.

Position Reports to: Principal

Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Library Science, Education, Information Technology or related field ; DPI licensure preferred


  • 1+ years working in elementary school library preferred


  • 1+ years developing and implementing specialized programming, specifically Library and Technology services


  • Bilingual speaker (Spanish) preferred


  • Ability to observe and maintain classroom


  • Exemplary interpersonal, planning and organizational skills


  • Above average user of MS Office software, IPads, Smart Boards


  • Ability to analyze an issue, identify options, and implement solutions


  • Ability to work cooperatively with people in and outside of the Education/Childcare Services department


  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and effectively interact with children, their family members, management, and staff members


  • Ability to respond positively to work direction and guidance from others


  • Ability to move, lift and store materials and equipment as required


  • Ability to work independently, managing multiple demanding tasks under critical timeframes


  • Current CPR, First Aid and Certification



Equipment Used: Office equipment: personal computers, Smart Boards, IPads, printers, phone systems, fax machine, photocopier.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Must have ability to sit (25%), walk/stand (75%), routinely throughout the shift. Must be able to periodically lift up to 50 lbs. Must have functional senses/manual dexterity to carry out the job; communicate effectively; and use of office equipment. Must have the ability to deal effectively with the stress of managing emergency/critical situations and multiple tasks.

Environmental Conditions: Performs duties with exposure to infectious or communicable diseases inherent to care children, and occasional exposure to loud or unpleasant voices due to unpredictable behavior of the children and seasonal exposure to high humidity, heat and cold due to the internal and external environment.

Essential Job Functions/Duties:

  • Extends excellent service to all children and families


  • Establishes appropriate relationships with children, parents/guardians and staff which ensures a safe environment that protects children/families' rights


  • Communicates verbally and in writing all pertinent information to support the education department's programs


  • Promotes student reading for information and pleasure, maintaining a library culture that encourages appreciation of literature and resource utilization


  • Develops and maintains a diversified library collection of print, non-print and electronic resources to support curricular needs, the development of student literacy and the interests of students


  • Provides effective support of program, volunteers, and services that ensure the planned use of the Learning Resource Center that supports the educational programs offered at SJA School and Childcare


  • Ensures environment of Library Resource Center is welcoming


  • Provides classroom teachers with resources, training and technology that supports innovative and engaging classroom environments


  • Coordinates programs through the Resource Center, such as Reading Challenges


  • Manages and coordinates Scholastic Book Fair


  • Maintain policies and procedures and other written documents for the Library Resource Center


  • Schedules and execute the MAP and Forward assessments, as well as reporting all data


  • Evaluate and monitor student progress


  • Support of all school functions, including, but not limited to, small group work, lunch room duty, recess duty, and/or dismissal duty.


  • Participates in continuing education programs for professional growth including in-service courses and meetings as required


  • Participates in meetings to improve communication and problem solving, as needed


  • Performs other duties as assigned
