Job Description

Under general supervision, the Operations Technician I plays a critical role in supporting SEMCO Energy's Operations Department by performing a wide range of field responsibilities across a designated geographic area.

This position is essential to ensure the safe and efficient maintenance of underground utility infrastructure through accurate locating, thorough documentation, and active participation in damage prevention efforts. The technician collaborates across departments, upholds compliance with industry regulations, including Public Act 174, and contributes to system upkeep, inspections, and various operational activities that protect community safety and support reliable gas distribution.

You Will

  • Accurate monthly meter reading.
  • Completion of the Collections process (Communicate with customers, delivery of notices, collect payment, and shut-off pass-due accounts).
  • Schedule daily collections activity and document pass-due accounts.
  • Accurately post cash payments and timely payment notification.
  • Assist in other Operational Areas when required ("Miss-Dig", leak survey, and inspection).
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field.

You Have

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver's License and eligible for company-provided vehicle insurance.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical & electrical principles is preferred.
  • Capable of completing the Operator Qualification Program upon hire.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications. Ability to learn new systems or software packages as necessary.

Working Conditions

This work is performed primarily in a field setting involving exposure to temperature, dust, and noise, and requires the use of personal protective equipment. This position may require working in confined spaces, on ladders, and in adverse weather conditions. Physical duties involve driving, sitting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, digging, operating heavy equipment, fine finger movement, and regularly lifting objects up to 50 lbs.

In addition to our standard benefits package, the estimated base hourly rate for this role will range from $23.41/hour - $34.05/hour, depending on experience.

SEMCO Energy is a regulated public utility providing natural gas and associated products to over 315,000 homes and businesses across Michigan. A subsidiary of AltaGas, SEMCO maintains approximately 12,000 miles of pipeline throughout the southeast, central, western, and northern regions of the state.
