Position Title: Phlebotomist I
Work Location:12020 Culebra Road, San Antonio, TX
(IOP - Family Practice inside Walgreens)
Assignment Duration: 3-Month

Work Schedule: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Monday-Friday, 1-hour lunch)
Position Summary:

The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to perform assigned duties including blood draws, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations.


Background & Context:

FMLA coverage at a doctor's office (IOP) located inside Walgreens. Potential for conversion to a permanent role at another location.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and update patient information
  • Collect and store specimens per established procedures
  • Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients
  • Demonstrate use of straight needles and butterfly needles
  • Understand and follow physicians' orders
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
  • Verify test requisitions for 100% accuracy
  • Package and store specimens according to required conditions
  • Follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend annual department training
  • Handle calls and communicate lab results as needed
  • Perform blood draws in an IOP Family Practice setting


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state)
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2-4 years of overall experience
  • At least 2 years of blood draw experience preferred
  • Comfortable handling difficult draws ("hard sticks")


Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Standing for most of the shift (with lunch break)
  • IOP Family Practice setting (medium-sized, inside Walgreens)
  • Working independently (sole phlebotomist)
  • Training: 1 week systems + 1 week onsite


Additional Information:

  • Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • 15-25 draws per day (adult to geriatric patients)
  • Hospital phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Required vaccines: MMR, Hep B (declinable), TB
  • Color vision required
