Position Title: Float Phlebotomist III
Work Location: Home Base: 3338 Oakwell Court, San Antonio, TX
(Float across various San Antonio area IOPs and PSCs)

Assignment Duration: 3-Month Contract
Work Schedule: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM or 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM (Monday-Friday)
Weekend OT on a volunteer basis (mandatory if required)

Position Summary:

The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to perform assigned duties including blood draws, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations.


Background & Context:

FMLA coverage with potential for conversion to a permanent role at another location (non-float).


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and update patient information
  • Collect and store specimens per established procedures
  • Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients
  • Demonstrate use of straight and butterfly needles
  • Understand and follow physicians' orders
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
  • Verify test requisitions for 100% accuracy
  • Package and store specimens appropriately for transport
  • Maintain specimen integrity per protocol
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend annual department training
  • Handle calls and communicate lab results as needed
  • Perform blood draws, processing, order entry, data entry, and drug screens
  • Float between multiple sites as required


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state)
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2-4 years of overall experience
  • At least 2 years of blood draw experience preferred
  • Comfortable with difficult draws ("hard sticks")


Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Standing for most of the shift (with lunch break)
  • Floating across multiple IOPs and PSCs in the San Antonio area
  • Work environment may vary (independent or team-based)
  • Training: 1 week systems + 1 week onsite
  • Reliable vehicle, valid driver's license, and good driving record required
  • Mileage reimbursement provided


Additional Information:

  • Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Patient population varies (pediatrics to geriatrics)
  • Required vaccines: MMR, Hep B (declinable), TB
  • Color vision required
  • Hospital phlebotomy experience preferred
