This role supports the NELA Program, which is housed within the ELPHD unit in the College of Education.

The Department of Education Leadership, Policy, and Human Development (ELPHD) comprises 40 full-time faculty members and more than 750 students. ELPHD advances education through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. Faculty in ELPHD prepare counselors, educational leaders, and workplace professionals who are committed to improve education-from K-12 schools, to community colleges and universities, to workplace training-through applied theory, rigorous research, professional ethics, and data-driven best practice. ELPHD offers graduate programs in Adult and Lifelong Education; Community College Leadership; Counselor Education; Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis; Educational Leadership; and Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice. The department emphasizes exemplary scholarship, teaching, and service in the context of a university education and has a vibrant research culture that inspires and guides students through teaching, advising, and dissertation supervision. As researchers and teachers, the faculty explore complex and pressing contemporary issues and problems facing education and society with a view toward solutions that will make a real, positive difference for students and higher education institutions.

NELA
The NC State Educational Leadership Academy ( NELA) is an innovative school leader preparation model designed to develop school leaders for rural, high-need schools. The grant-funded model has a number of unique features including: incorporates field-based experiences into coursework, experiences in the action of the school day for the aspiring school leaders in K-12 school settings, providing NELA Fellows (participants) with a student teacher to replenish the teaching pipeline, a principal mentor, and an executive leadership coach, visitations to high-performing schools across the state and nation, a community-based summer internship focused on building school-community connections and a paid year-long internship with rotational instructional rounds. NELA Fellows are individuals deeply committed to improving persistently low-achieving schools and will make a three-year, post-degree commitment to work in high-need schools.
Position Summary

The Principal Development Advisor
supports aspiring school leaders in the Master of School Administration ( MSA) program through individualized coaching and structured reflection. Serving as a confidential thought partner, this role strengthens Fellows' leadership practice, problem-solving, and decision-making as they apply theory in real school contexts. Working closely with the Aspiring Principals Learning & Performance Coach, Principal Mentors, and program leadership, the Advisor ensures aligned support while guiding Fellows toward successful completion of the Executive Standards Work Plan ( ESWP) and the North Carolina Principal Portfolio Assessment ( NCPPA).

Key Responsibilities


  • Coach & Develop Fellows: Provide consistent (at minimum weekly) coaching; guide reflection, decision-making, and resolution of Problems of Practice; model effective coaching practices
  • Support ESWP & Portfolio Progress: Assist with goal setting, implementation, and alignment of ESWP; support development of portfolio artifacts and completion of NCPPA milestones
  • Collaborate & Communicate: Partner with mentors and program staff; share insights, address concerns, and ensure coordinated support for Fellow success
  • Monitor Progress & Provide Feedback: Review experiences, track progress, and deliver timely, actionable feedback and progress summaries
  • Facilitate Engagement: Lead monthly in-person and virtual check-ins; participate in assessment days and program events
  • Prepare Fellows for Leadership Roles: Provide career coaching, including mock interviews and resume support

Key Responsibilities
Individualized Coaching & Support

  • Provide ongoing, individualized coaching to assigned Fellows through consistent (at minimum weekly) contact.
  • Serve as a confidential thought partner, supporting Fellows in reflecting on their leadership practice and decision-making.
  • Guide Fellows in diagnosing and addressing Problems of Practice to build leadership efficacy and independence.
  • Engage in crucial conversations with Fellows as needed and collaborate with the program team to support individualized improvement plans to ensure adequate progress.
  • Facilitate simulated internship and school leadership scenarios that promote Fellows' continuous growth and development.
  • Contribute to the development of Fellows' own coaching skills by modeling effective coaching practices and providing opportunities for Fellows to practice and refine these skills through the coaching process.



Executive Standards Work Plan (ESWP) Support

  • Assist Fellows in developing, refining, and implementing their Executive Standards Work Plan (ESWP).
  • Support goal setting and periodic revisions to ensure alignment with leadership standards and program expectations.
  • Reinforce connections between Fellows' experiences, ESWP goals, and portfolio artifacts.


Collaboration & Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with Principal Mentors to ensure alignment in supporting Fellow development.
  • Collaborate with the Aspiring Principals Learning & Performance Coach and program leadership to share relevant insights and support coordination.
  • Communicate proactively with the program team regarding concerns that may impact a Fellow's progress. Meet monthly to provide updates on Fellow progress and coaching processes.
  • Participate in required coaching trainings and ongoing professional learning as defined by the program. Stay current with emerging technologies and demonstrate a commitment to leveraging digital tools to support communication, tracking, and leadership development.


Monitoring & Feedback

  • Review Fellows' reflections and experiences to ensure a broad and meaningful range of leadership opportunities.
  • Provide timely, actionable, and growth-oriented feedback.
  • Contribute to end-of-semester progress summaries to inform program decision-making.
  • Track and communicate Fellow progress using program systems, including shared platforms such as Google Sheets or other digital tools, ensuring timely and accurate updates.


Portfolio & Program Milestones

  • Provide formative feedback on Fellows' progress toward completion of the North Carolina Principal Portfolio Assessment.
  • Support Fellows in preparing portfolio artifacts and reflecting on their leadership growth.
  • Work in close alignment with district partners and mentors to ensure Fellows are meeting all required NCPPA benchmarks and experiences.

Coaching Engagement Structure

  • Meet face-to-face on-site with Fellows and their Principal Mentors on a monthly basis.
  • Conduct separate monthly meetings with Fellows to support individualized reflection and goal progress.
  • Facilitate virtual check-ins between in-person meetings to ensure ongoing support and accountability.
  • Engage in Candidate Assessment Days and Formative Assessment Days, as well as culminating program experiences such as end-of-year Problem of Practice presentations.


Career Preparation

  • Assist Fellows in preparing for leadership roles through role plays, mock interviews, resume review, and career coaching.
  • Support Fellows in identifying and articulating their leadership experiences for job placement.


Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated ability to utilize digital tools (e.g., Google Workspace) for communication, tracking progress, and program coordination.

  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in K-12 school leadership (e.g., principal, assistant principal, or district leadership role).
  • Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, or supporting adult learners.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and reflective facilitation skills.
  • Ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality in coaching relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders across schools and organizations.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Doctoral degree (EdD or PhD) in Educational Leadership or a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a school principal.
  • Experience supporting leadership development or principal preparation programs.
  • Familiarity with the North Carolina Principal Portfolio Assessment or similar performance-based assessments.
  • Experience supporting goal-setting frameworks such as leadership standards or individualized development plans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership development.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in leveraging emerging technologies, including AI, to support leadership development.
