Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Network Services Automation Group Lead within the ESnet division. The Group Lead for Network Services Automation manages a technical team responsible for managing software tools used by ESnet network engineers, and working with ESnet software engineering teams to develop an advanced highly integrated network automation system to manage all of ESnet's next-generation network and services.

As a member of the Network Services leadership team, the group lead collaborates with other leaders to develop and implement department-wide vision, strategies, plans, and programs that deliver on ESnet's strategic goals and meet the needs of ESnet's users.

You will:

  • Day-to-day management of a team of network engineers and software developers. This includes recruiting, onboarding, mentoring, and developing team members; establishing role expectations, growth plans, and effective operating practices.

  • Build a team culture that promotes high performance, collaboration, and psychological safety.

  • Continually improve and evolving team processes, structures, and practices to enhance team performance.

  • Drive network automation roadmap requirements by understanding future needs and changes for the network and engaging with ESnet software development teams to deliver needed network automation software enhancements.

  • Oversee development and enhancement of network engineering software tools, related to network configuration automation and orchestration as well as network engineering utilities.

  • Support the Networking Department Head in budget development and management by forecasting procurements.

  • Manage relevant network operational work.

  • Participate as a member of the Division Leadership Team, collaborating with Department Heads, Group Leads, and CS Area and ESnet Division leadership to align platform strategy with organizational objectives.

We are looking for:

  • Typically requires an advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a managerial role of a complex computer systems or networking unit.

  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in leading high performing technical staff, with emphasis on wide area network engineering disciplines.

  • Understanding of current applicable networking engineering/architecture, especially related to large scale network configuration automation, network orchestration, and relevant technologies.

  • Knowledge and experience guiding networking architecture and related software development with the ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated success collaborating as both a team member and team leader.

  • Demonstrated experience hiring, training, and mentoring technical staff.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing network engineering processes and plans, with strong network implementation project management skills.

  • Excellent operational skills, with a focus on global network infrastructure, continuous improvement, and metric-driven operational performance management.

  • Appointment type:This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary range: The expected salary for this position is $203,496 - $248,736, which fits into the full salary of $180,876 - $305,268 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.

  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work modality: Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
