Position Summary:

The Senior Engineer or Engineer III - Advanced Automation & Integration Standards (DPAC) within Power Grid Operations Distribution Protection Automation Control (DPAC) Enterprise Standards, supports the development and sustainment of advanced distribution automation standards in support of grid modernization initiatives. This role addresses the increasing complexity of gridedge automation driven by Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) integration, planned islanding (microgrids), edge control RTUs, and highspeed switching and reliability systems deployed across Duke Energy's service territory.

This position is responsible for developing repeatable, enterpriseready automation standards, performing advanced integration and testing, and supporting the validation and transition of automation technologies into production environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain advanced automation and integration standards supporting:

  • DERMS visibility, monitoring, and remote-control OT device interface

  • Edge control RTUs for planned islanding and microgrid applications

  • Highspeed switching and advanced reliability automation systems

  • Translate projectspecific automation requirements into standardized solutions in partnership with the Grid Automation & Innovation (A&I) team.

  • Develop standard RTU architectures, including 80%designed RTU templates, control logic, and coding frameworks.

  • Support advanced integration and testing of automation systems to ensure effective coordination with SCADA/ADMS and field devices.

  • Support utilization and management the Operational & Automation Standards Control HardwareintheLoop (CHIL) Lab, including configuration, testing use, remote access, and lab standards.

  • Collaborate with Grid A&I on coordination with production CHIL lab environments.

  • Support utilization of the standards CHIL lab budget and support technology refresh and testing needs.

  • Work closely with the Grid Systems team to support device integration, commissioning readiness, and transition to production.

  • Support vendor engagement and collaboration with the Emerging Technology Office on advanced automation concepts.

Required/Basic Qualifications for Engineer III
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a master's degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

  • Minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience

Required/Basic Qualifications for Senior Engineer
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline

  • Experience in distribution automation, building or industrial control systems and RTUs, utility control systems, or gridedge technologies.

  • Experience with RTUbased automation architectures, SCADA/ADMS integration, and engineering standards development.

  • Strong technical collaboration and communication skills.

Addiitonal Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with IEC 61131 programming language

  • Familiarity/experience utilizing and programming SEL RTACs

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Experience with DERMS integration, microgrids, highspeed switching, or CHIL testing environments.

  • Familiarity with industry automation and DER standards.

Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
