Technical Architect - Mainframe Services

Job Overview: The Technical Architect is responsible for the end-to-end technical design, integrity, and delivery of Mainframe-based solutions across project and operational lifecycles. This role ensures that all architecture and engineering activities align with defined standards, client requirements, and long-term strategic objectives. The Technical Architect provides deep technical leadership across IBM Mainframe and Storage platforms, guiding engineering teams, validating designs, and ensuring high-quality implementation. This individual plays a critical role in bridging architecture and execution, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and operationally supportable.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership



  • Owns the technical architecture and design authority across delivery engagements
  • Provides hands-on guidance to engineering and operations teams on IBM Mainframe systems, software, Storage Solutions, and tooling
  • Ensure adherence to architectural standards, best practices, and governance processes
  • Reviews and approve detailed technical designs, implementation plans, and engineering deliverables Solution



Delivery & Execution



  • Translates high-level solution architecture into detailed technical designs and actionable work packages
  • Ability to travel/Video to meet with customers and present mainframe solutions and offerings in detail
  • Leads technical implementation, integration, and transition into steady-state operations
  • Supports troubleshooting and resolution of complex technical issues across infrastructure and applications
  • Ensures system performance, scalability, availability, and security requirements are met Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Works closely with Solution Architects, Project Managers, and Client stakeholders to ensure alignment between design and delivery
  • Acts as the primary technical escalation point for delivery teams and customer environments
  • Provides technical input into project planning, risk management, and change control processes
  • Works closely with IBM, EMC, and Hitachi for data storage and design solutions.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Drives continuous improvement of system reliability, automation, and operational efficiency
  • Defines and enforces standards for monitoring, capacity planning, and disaster recovery
  • Supports transition-to-service activities including documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer



Core Requirements:



  • Minimum of 12-15 years of IT experience with a strong focus on IBM Mainframe technologies
  • Extensive hands-on experience with IBM z-Series systems, including z/OS, storage, networking, and system software
  • Proven experience in a Technical Architect or Senior Engineering leadership role
  • Deep understanding of mainframe infrastructure, system programming, and enterprise IT environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues
  • Ability to lead technical teams and influence without direct authority
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders



Preferred Skills & Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with Mainframe modernization, transformation, or migration initiatives
  • Experience with automation, DevOps practices, and modern engineering methodologies in a mainframe environment
  • Prior experience working with major vendors (IBM, Broadcom, BMC, etc.)
  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise or managed services environments
