Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks an innovative, independent, and strategic professional to serve as the Career Counseling Officer (New Student Career Engagement) within the Office of Career Exploration and Success at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Reporting to the Associate Director for New Student Career Engagement, this role leads the development and expansion of new early career engagement initiatives that embed career exploration into the first-year student experience.
A central responsibility of the position is supporting the expansion of First-Year Interest Group Seminars ( FIGS), including the development and implementation of new topical "Exploring Careers" sections that help students explore Rutgers resources through the lens of broader career interest areas. Designed especially for students still deciding on a future career path, these courses support self-discovery, career exploration, and early career readiness development. The Career Counseling Officer also directs the Intern for a Day ( IFAD) program, leads the Discovery & Exploration Career Community, supervises Peer Instructors and graduate staff, and develops scalable programming that connects students' academic experiences with career pathways early in their Rutgers journey.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Supports the development, implementation, and expansion of First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS), including topical "Exploring Careers" sections focused on navigating Rutgers resources, self-discovery and career exploration for students still exploring future career pathways.
  • Designs and refines curriculum that helps students explore their interests, strengths, values, and career possibilities while supporting course operations, instructional consistency, and program scaling.
  • Directs the Intern for a Day (IFAD) program and leads the Discovery & Exploration Career Community by developing early career exploration programming, experiential learning opportunities, and engagement initiatives.
  • Builds and sustains partnerships with industry professionals, faculty, student success partners, and campus stakeholders to expand access to career exploration opportunities for first-year students.
  • Provides individual and group career advising to first-year students and students exploring academic and career pathways.
  • Develops and facilitates workshops, presentations, and group programming focused on self-assessment, career exploration, and early career decision-making.
  • Supervises graduate staff, undergraduate Peer Instructors, and program operations, including recruitment, training, coaching, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Supports broader course administration processes and ensures alignment with university policies and program goals.
  • Participates in meetings, professional development, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Supports Rutgers University's visibility within the career services field through conference presentations, publications, professional engagement, and contributions to professional associations.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree and five years of relevant experience or a Master's Degree with three years of relevant experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum development, workshop facilitation, career advising or coaching, program development, supervision of student staff, and scalable student engagement initiatives within higher education or career development environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities, and the capacity to cultivate and sustain relationships with students, faculty, employers, and campus partners while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Leadership capabilities, independent judgment, attention to detail, and proficiency with learning management, career management, and related technology platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Experience within career services first-year experience programs, academic advising, student affairs, experiential learning, employer engagement, teaching, curriculum development, or related higher education settings.
  • Experience developing academic courses, leading first-year initiatives, supervising student staff, or designing career exploration programming within higher education.

  • Sakai, Canvas, or similar learning management platforms.
