SUMMARY:
As a member of the Comprehensive Spine Center team, reporting to the attending physicians, performs physical examinations, interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests, formulates a differential diagnosis, and establishes a working diagnosis, develops a treatment plan for neurosurgical, physiatry and pain conditions within the scope of practice and in conjunction with the neurosurgeon, physiatrist, and pain specialist. Implements therapeutic intervention for specific conditions where appropriate, exercises judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising neurosurgeon, physiatrist, pain specialist, or other healthcare professional.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages the outpatient acute and chronic care of patients presenting for treatment.Directs patient care by performing a patient assessment, review of systems, and physical examination.Formulates treatment plans.Performs basic office procedures such as joint and trigger point injections, occipital nerve blocks, bursa injections.Performs status checks during and after Spinal Cord Stimulator trial and implant procedures. Removes leads at end of percutaneous trial.Programs intrathecal medication delivery systems (pumps), performs pump refills, performs status checks during and after intrathecal system trials and implant procedures, carefully documents all patient encounters and monitors subjective pain levels and objective functional status, and follows evidenced based, nationally accepted guidelines as well as strict policies and procedures for management of pumps patients.Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. Collaborates with other health care providers, including NP/PA providers of the Neurosurgery Department, as the patient's health needs dictate, consults and cases with physicians and other health care providers.Refers patients to other physicians/specialists for continued care as the patient's needs indicate.Performs pre-operative history and physical exams for patients undergoing OR procedures, such as spinal cord stimulation or minimally invasive spinal procedures, assists in OR with wound closures. Returns phone calls from patients.Handles prescription refills.Initiates and completes prior authorization request for medications.Initiates and completes peer to peer reviews at request of insurance companies.Reviews radiographic reports and laboratory reports for abnormalities.Reviews x-rays, MRIs and CT scans of hospitalized patients and office patients with the physician.Evaluates, screens and counsels patients on health maintenance and promotes utilization of community resources.Utilizes appropriate E& M coding guidelines for clinic billing.Documents and dictates all clinical encounters in a timely fashion.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Bachelor's Degree and graduate of accredited nurse practitioner program required. Must be board certified by ANCC. Master's degree preferred.Current license as nurse practitioner in the State of Rhode Island required.Federal DEA certificate, State Controlled Substance Certificate in RI and ACLS trained required.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to deal effectively and empathically with patients, families and other members of the healthcare team.EXPERIENCE:Three to five years of experience preferably in a Pain, Spine, or Orthopedic practice, with management experience of intrathecal pump patients. Previous experience in an academic medical center environment preferred.

Pay Range:

$127,504.00-$161,782.40
