| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Military Science, the Department of Naval Science and the Department of Aerospace Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provide Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC} training and academic course offerings to students at
UNC. Each department functions independently and is governed by separate branches of the military - Military Science (Army), Naval Science (Navy) and Aerospace Studies (Air Force). Each unit provides leadership training, specialized academics, general orientation and hands-on experience regarding all aspects of the military to all university students - scholarship (officer-track), non-scholarship (officer-track), non-scholarship (non-officer-track) and general interest (non-officer-track). Successful officer-track students (cadets or midshipmen [Navy]) are commissioned into the United States Army, Air Force, Navy or Marines. These departments are unique from any academic departments on campus in that all personnel (faculty and staff) are active duty military, retired military or civil service employees - with the exception of two full-time university employees employed by the state of North Carolina. These two university employees provide administrative assistance to all three departments. The Department of Military Science has 4 full-time, fixed-term faculty, 2 full-time military Information management and personnel staff members and 2 full-time Gold Bar recruiters serving a student (cadet) base of 50-75. The Department of Naval Science has 6 full- time, fixed term faculty, 3 full-time Information management and personnel staff members and 1 full- time additional duty recruiting officer serving a student (midshipmen) base of 50-75. The Department of Aerospace Studies has 3 full-time, fixed-term faculty, 2 full-time Information management and personnel-actions staff members and one part-time university employee uniform and equipment custodian serving a student (cadet) base of 30-60. Each faculty and staff member in these departments serves a 3-year tour of duty and all are paid by the US military. Oftentimes, these military employees are gone for long periods of time (Temporary Duty Assignments), leaving only the university employee to maintain the office. These departments provide several services to the university and the community Including organizing the annual Veteran's Day Ceremony on campus, providing color guard for athletic and special university events, hosting visits from military VIPs/distinguished visitors, and participating in various community outreach projects (Marines Toys for Tots, campus blood drive, local community military appreciation events, etc.). |
