Position Title: Recycling Laborer

Location: Fort Hood, Texas

Employment Type: Full-Time

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, generally 0700-1600, with flexibility based on facility operations, seasonal conditions, sampling, monitoring, and contract requirements.

Reports To: Recycling Specialist / Site Lead

Position Type: On-site

This is an SCA-covered position and includes applicable health and welfare/fringe benefits in accordance with the wage determination.


Position Summary

DAWSON is seeking a Recycling Laborer to support compost facility operations at Fort Hood, Texas. This position will provide hands-on support for receiving, sorting, debagging, processing, staging, blending, cleaning, container support, housekeeping, and finished compost distribution activities.

The Recycling Laborer will work under the direction of the Recycling Specialist / Site Lead and will assist with the daily operation and maintenance of the compost facility. This role is field-based and physically active, supporting the processing of food waste, manure, wood waste, yard waste, chipped wood debris, and other compostable materials.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive, sort, and process compostable materials delivered to the compost facility.
  • Assist with dropped-off raw compost material, food waste, manure, wood waste, yard waste, chipped wood debris, and other acceptable compostable material.
  • Debag yard waste and other bagged compostable materials as directed.
  • Remove trash, recyclables, plastics, metals, and other non-compostable contaminants from compost material streams.
  • Place non-compostable materials in appropriate containers or designated areas.
  • Assist with staging, blending, and placement of food waste, manure, chipped wood debris, and yard waste into compost windrows.
  • Support maintenance of windrows, piles, receiving areas, processing areas, and storage areas.
  • Assist with pile/windrow housekeeping, spacing, size control, odor control, and nuisance prevention activities.
  • Support processing of raw wood debris and staging of material for future processing or compost use.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining food waste containers, lids, liners, and container storage areas.
  • Help place, move, line, clean, and replace 64-gallon food waste containers as assigned.
  • Support truck unloading, material movement, and site cleanup after collection routes.
  • Assist with weighing, recording, and tracking incoming and outgoing materials when directed.
  • Support finished compost distribution, including loading assistance, site cleanup, and documentation support.
  • Clean equipment, tools, work areas, and material handling areas as assigned.
  • Remove standing water, exposed raw materials, spilled material, and equipment track-out when observed or directed.
  • Identify and report contamination, unsafe conditions, damaged containers, equipment concerns, odors, pests, fire hazards, or housekeeping issues.
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, sanitation procedures, equipment exclusion zones, and installation rules.
  • Perform other compost facility support duties as assigned by the Recycling Specialist / Site Lead.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in recycling, composting, landscaping, grounds maintenance, sanitation, warehouse, construction labor, agriculture, material handling, or similar field-based work preferred.
  • Ability to perform physically active outdoor labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, shovel, rake, sort, clean, and move materials as required.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, safety procedures, and site-specific work practices.
  • Ability to identify obvious contamination, unsafe conditions, or equipment concerns and report them promptly.
  • Ability to work around food waste, manure, wood debris, yard waste, odors, dust, insects, and composting materials.
  • Ability to pass installation access, background, badging, or position-of-trust requirements, as applicable.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in composting, recycling, solid waste, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or facility support.
  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools, pressure washers, hoses, small equipment, or material handling equipment.
  • Experience supporting loader/skid steer operations, traffic control, or vehicle spotting.
  • Prior experience working on a military installation or under a government contract.
  • Valid driver's license.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in heat, cold, rain, dust, odors, and other field conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, shovel, rake, lift, push, pull, and carry materials throughout the workday.
  • Ability to move containers, bags, liners, tools, hoses, debris, and compostable materials.
  • Ability to work near active vehicles and equipment while following safety controls.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
