Responsibilities

As the Director of Engineering, you are the senior engineering leader responsible for the execution, delivery, organizational effectiveness, and operational excellence of DAPI's engineering organization. Reporting to the VP, Data & AI Product Innovation, you oversee Software Engineering, Data Engineering, and Quality Engineering through their respective Lead Engineers.

You are accountable for building and scaling a high-performing engineering organization that delivers secure, reliable, scalable, and high-quality software products, enterprise data platforms, and AI-enabled capabilities that advance NYBCe's strategic objectives. You establish engineering operating models, workforce planning, delivery governance, quality management practices, and cross-functional collaboration frameworks that enable teams to execute effectively at scale.

While Lead Engineers serve as the primary architects within their respective disciplines, the Director of Engineering retains ultimate accountability for engineering architecture, technology strategy, and technical direction across DAPI. The Director ensures architectural decisions align across Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Quality Engineering, AI platforms, and enterprise technology initiatives to create a scalable, secure, and cohesive engineering ecosystem.

Engineering Organization Leadership

    Lead and develop DAPI's Software Engineering, Data Engineering, and Quality Engineering organizations through their respective Lead Engineers.
  • Establish organizational structures, hiring, career development frameworks, succession planning, and workforce strategies that support long-term growth.
  • Develop and maintain DAPI's engineering technology roadmap, ensuring platform investments support business priorities, scalability, security, and future growth.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage performance, coaching, and leadership development for engineering teams.
  • Align engineering capacity and organizational priorities with DAPI's strategic objectives.

Technical Architecture & Platform Direction

  • Own DAPI's enterprise engineering architecture, ensuring software, data, AI, quality, and cloud platforms operate as a cohesive technology ecosystem.
  • Establish engineering technology strategy, architectural principles, and technical standards across all engineering disciplines.
  • Provide architectural governance for major initiatives, platform investments, and enterprise technology decisions.
  • Partner with Lead Engineers to align domain architectures with DAPI's long-term technology roadmap.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and platform capabilities to support modernization, scalability, security, and operational excellence.

Delivery & Operational Excellence

  • Own engineering execution across DAPI's software, data, analytics, and AI portfolios.
  • Establish delivery governance, operational metrics, and performance reporting to improve predictability, transparency, and accountability.
  • Partner with Product and Delivery leadership to align engineering capacity with roadmap priorities and business objectives.
  • Ensure platform reliability, quality standards, incident management, and operational readiness across all engineering functions.

  • Resolve cross-functional delivery risks, resource constraints, and organizational blockers.

Cross-Functional & Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Analytics, Infrastructure, Security, and business stakeholders to align engineering efforts with organizational priorities.
  • Represent Engineering in executive planning, enterprise architecture reviews, vendor evaluations, and strategic technology initiatives.
  • Communicate engineering strategy, progress, risks, and investment recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Ensure alignment between engineering, AI, data, quality, and enterprise technology strategies.

Financial, Risk & Compliance Management

  • Participate in engineering budget planning, workforce forecasting, vendor management, and technology investment decisions.
  • Ensure engineering practices comply with HIPAA, cybersecurity requirements, AI governance standards, and applicable regulatory obligations.
  • Oversee engineering participation in audits, risk assessments, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity initiatives.
  • Balance technology investment, operational efficiency, risk management, and long-term sustainability.

Technology Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement across software engineering, data engineering, quality engineering, DevOps, DataOps, and AI enablement practices.
  • Sponsor initiatives that improve productivity, quality, automation, reliability, and scalability.
  • Foster a culture of experimentation, learning, and responsible technology innovation.
  • Develop and maintain DAPI's long-term engineering technology roadmap.


Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related quantitative field.

Experience:

  • 10 - 12+ years of progressive engineering experience across software engineering, data engineering, cloud platforms, quality engineering, or related technology disciplines.
  • 7+ years of engineering leadership experience managing technical leaders, engineering managers, quality organizations, or multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • 3+ years leading multiple engineering disciplines simultaneously, including software, data, quality, platform, or infrastructure functions.
  • Demonstrated success leading engineering organizations responsible for enterprise-scale software products, data platforms, AI-enabled solutions, and quality engineering practices.
  • Experience managing engineering delivery across multiple teams and technology domains.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering, data engineering, quality engineering, DevOps, DataOps, cloud architecture, and AI platform practices.
  • Proven success building engineering organizations, developing leaders, and establishing scalable operating models.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate engineering strategy and delivery performance to executive leadership.

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $190,000 p/yr. to $200,000 p/yr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant's skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
