Position description

The Program in Religious Studies is accepting applications for part time lecturer positions for the 2026-2027 academic year. We are seeking candidates with robust teaching experience who can contribute to our required undergraduate courses for the major. Beyond the ability to convey the required content, we are seeking teachers who will creatively help students engage with the study of religion as expressed in our programmatic aim.

Religious Studies 5B: World Religious II (Fall 2026* // Tues & Thurs 11:00am-12:20pm)

An introduction to various religious traditions in selected areas of the world-including India and South Asia, East Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This is a large course of 150-160 students who come from disciplines across campus, and includes discussion sections hosted by 2 teaching assistants.

Religious Studies 155. Topics in Race and Religion (Winter or Spring 2027 // Time TBD)

Critical analysis of race and religion as expressed through (1) various structures of socio-political ordering, metaphysics, language, class, colorism, power, biology, nationalism, and culture, and (2) various expressions of moral philosophy, ethics, music, literature, arts, rituals, liberation, and revolution.

Initial review of applications will begin July 28, 2026. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

Lecturer appointments are term appointments. The term appointment falls under the purview of the agreement between the University of California and the American Federation of Teachers. Terms and conditions of employment are subject to UC policy and the collective bargaining agreement. The salary per course is $8872.13.

Interested applicants must provide a Letter of Application, CV, Sample syllabus of your proposed course, Teaching Statement, Evidence of Teaching Excellence (i.e., course evaluations or teaching evaluation), and two (2) Letters of Recommendation.

Requirements: Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field, teaching experience at the college level and familiarity with or willingness to learn the CANVAS learning platform. Lecturers with prior UC experience are preferred.
