    Provide overall leadership for facilities operations and maintenance services at the National Agricultural Library. The Chief Engineer will supervise onsite maintenance personnel, coordinate daily work, support customer communication, and help ensure safe, reliable operation of building systems.

    Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the onsite facilities operations and maintenance team in accordance with contract requirements, FSE procedures, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Plan, assign, oversee, and inspect preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, service calls, and emergency response activities.
  • Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and support mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, building automation, and utility systems as required.
  • Coordinate work with the customer, FSE management, subcontractors, vendors, and facility personnel.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, work order notes, equipment records, material usage records, and other required documentation.
  • Support scheduling, staffing coordination, training, quality control, safety meetings, and performance reporting.
  • Respond to emergencies, outages, callbacks, after-hours work, or other operational needs when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Significant experience in facilities operations and maintenance, including mechanical systems, HVAC systems, central utility equipment, and building operations.
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience in commercial, institutional, federal, research, or similar facilities.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow work orders, drawings, diagrams, O&M manuals, technical instructions, safety procedures, and site rules.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs, CMMS/work order systems, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong reliability, professionalism, customer service, communication, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to pass required background check, drug screening, badging, security, or site access requirements.
  • Valid driver's license may be required for positions that operate company or site vehicles.Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, Lead Engineer, or similar supervisory facilities role.
  • Experience working in federal, government, research, institutional, industrial, or commercial facilities.
  • Stationary engineer, HVAC, boiler, or other applicable trade license or certification.
  • Experience with building automation systems, boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps, utilities, energy management, and multi-trade maintenance coordination.
Physical Requirements

This position may require standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, lifting, carrying tools or materials, working in mechanical spaces, and performing duties indoors and outdoors in varying conditions. Specific requirements will depend on the final position assignment and worksite needs.
