    Install, operate, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair HVAC and related mechanical systems at the National Agricultural Library. This position supports safe, reliable facility operations through preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and timely response to service needs.

    Key Responsibilities
  • Perform duties associated with the HVAC Mechanic position in accordance with contract requirements, FSE procedures, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair HVAC equipment, air handling units, pumps, fans, motors, valves, controls, dampers, coils, VAV boxes, and related mechanical components.
  • Support operation and maintenance of boilers, chillers, heating systems, cooling systems, ventilation systems, and building automation controls as assigned.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, inspections, adjustments, filter changes, belt changes, lubrication, and equipment testing.
  • Use safe work practices, proper tools, lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment, and site-specific requirements.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, work order notes, material usage records, equipment records, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, team members, customer representatives, and facility personnel.
  • Support emergency response, after-hours work, weekend work, callbacks, or on-call requirements when needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant experience maintaining and repairing HVAC, mechanical, and building systems in commercial, institutional, industrial, federal, or similar facilities.
  • Knowledge of HVAC troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, mechanical equipment, controls, and safe work practices.
  • EPA Section 608 certification is required if handling refrigerants.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow work orders, drawings, diagrams, O&M manuals, technical instructions, safety procedures, and site rules.
  • Strong reliability, professionalism, customer service, communication, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to pass required background check, drug screening, badging, security, or site access requirements.
  • Valid driver's license may be required for positions that operate company or site vehicles.Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in federal, government, research, institutional, industrial, or commercial facilities.
  • Trade school, apprenticeship, journeyman-level HVAC training, or related HVAC/mechanical certifications.
  • Experience with building automation systems, chillers, boilers, air handlers, pumps, VAV systems, and commercial HVAC controls.
  • Experience using CMMS, work order systems, safety programs, and formal maintenance documentation.
Physical Requirements

This position may require standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, lifting, carrying tools or materials, working in mechanical spaces, and performing duties indoors and outdoors in varying conditions. Specific requirements will depend on the final position assignment and worksite needs.
