I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:
The Division for Campus Safety aims to provide a safe and secure campus for all members of the university community through best-in-class technological and physical infrastructure, proactive assessment and analysis, and a caring team of professionals dedicated to upholding the university's values with the highest degree of conscientiousness.

Reporting to the Director, the Associate Director provides senior operational leadership for OAS's confidential, traumainformed advocacy services and campuswide prevention education. The Associate Director is expected to work with students, faculty, and staff, including employees and faculty impacted by the victimizations covered under the District's Confidential Resource Advisor ( CRA) framework, and to ensure services are accessible, equitable, and culturally responsive. In close partnership with the Director, the Associate Director has substantive decisionmaking authority to assess risk for incoming cases and to triage, assign, and escalate cases based on acuity, safety needs, and institutional complexity, ensuring timely response and continuity of services. This role directly supervises the Prevention Specialist and Advocacy Specialist; leads annual planning for prevention programming, partnerships, and the Prevention and Outreach budget; and serves as a senior representative of OAS with highlevel internal stakeholders (e.g., HR leadership, academic deans, school/division leadership) and external partners (including executive leadership teams of local community partner agencies, such as the DC, Maryland, and Virginia Coalitions to End Sexual Violence, the DC, Maryland, and Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the DC, Maryland, and Virginia Sexual Assault Response Teams).

The Associate Director provides coverage for the Director as needed, including direct engagement with senior university leadership, to maintain operational continuity. The Associate Director acts as a subject matter expert, providing technical assistance and internal consultation to university offices and departments, represents OAS on relevant committees and task forces related to best practices in campus response to interpersonal violence, and works closely with the Director to create, manage, and implement the annual Prevention and Outreach budget in alignment with Division for Campus Safety and university priorities.

Primary Responsibilities Include

  • Deputy leadership/office operations: Partner with the Director to set and execute OAS strategy; develop, implement, and continuously refine OAS operational protocols; ensure continuity of services; support strategic planning aligned with the Division for Campus Safety; and serve as acting lead as needed to ensure uninterrupted coverage, decision-making, and senior-level consultation.

  • Director coverage and executive engagement: Provide coverage for the Director during absences, including direct interaction with senior university leaders as needed, and maintain regular engagement with HR leadership, academic deans, school/division leadership, and external partner agency executives to coordinate high-acuity responses and prevention partnerships.

  • Risk assessment, triage, and escalation: Serve as first line of review and triage in assessing risk for incoming cases; determining acuity; triaging, assigning, and escalating cases using established protocols; and ensuring timely follow-up, consistent documentation practices, and safety planning standards across the office, escalating to the Director when appropriate.

  • Confidential advocacy services (students + employees/faculty): Provide high-acuity crisis intervention, safety planning, and ongoing systems navigation for survivors impacted by sexual misconduct and other covered victimizations, including employee and faculty cases that may involve workplace dynamics, dependents/caregiver needs, and multi-jurisdiction resource coordination (DC/MD/VA) based on residence and remote work patterns. This will include working with the appropriate law enforcement agencies, investigative and judicial entities, social service agencies, and other entities involved in client cases across the above jurisdictions and/or the jurisdiction in which the client is located (for fully remote staff).

  • Direct supervision (Prevention Specialist and Advocacy Specialist): Directly supervise the Prevention Specialist and Advocacy Specialist, including goal-setting, coaching, performance management, and professional development; provide oversight of prevention staffing and workplans through the Prevention Specialist; and ensure prevention strategy, programming, partnerships, and metrics align with OAS standards and campus needs.

  • Budget leadership (Prevention & Outreach): Lead the creation, management, and annual implementation of the Prevention and Outreach budget; track expenditures; and support financial planning aligned with Division for Campus Safety and university priorities, implementing as authorized by the Director.

  • Campus and community coordination: Serve as a senior confidential liaison to campus and community partners; coordinate effectively with medical personnel, social services, law enforcement, and legal resources to safeguard case management integrity and support client access to appropriate care, consistent with trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices.

  • Prevention and education leadership: Co-lead (with the Prevention Specialist and Director) the design and implementation of campus-wide prevention programming to raise awareness, strengthen bystander skills, and improve campus culture and the student/employee experience related to sexual misconduct and associated harms.

  • Student team leadership (indirect): Ensure effective staffing, training, and role clarity for student prevention staff through the Prevention Specialist; coordinate with the Director and Advocacy Specialist to support sustainable coverage models for student advocacy staff and to strengthen escalation pathways for complex cases.

  • Training and first-responder readiness: Support training and consultation for campus partners and first responders to strengthen trauma-informed response and effective referral pathways while maintaining confidentiality boundaries and survivor choice.

  • Institutional committees and working groups: Represent OAS as delegated by the Director on campus-wide committees and working groups (e.g., sexual misconduct prevention/response, Title IX coordination working groups, threat assessment) to strengthen survivor-centered policy and practice while maintaining confidentiality boundaries and non-disciplinary role separation.

  • Policy fluency, compliance support, and continuous improvement: Collaborate with the Director in monitoring relevant federal/District requirements and institutional policies impacting sexual misconduct response and confidential services; recommend and implement operational improvements based on periodic assessments and emerging best practices.

  • Other duties as assigned: Perform other duties as assigned; omission of specific duties does not preclude assignment of logically related responsibilities.
