Overview
In this role, you will independently manage complex liability D&O and EPL claims involving public entities - municipalities, police officers/departments, etc. and school boards. You will investigate, evaluate, and resolve claims from initial notice through final resolution while providing excellent service to policyholders, agents, and other stakeholders. What You'll Do Manage complex claims involving public entities, including: Tort Claim Notices and compliance with applicable state requirements; land use and zoning-related disputes; violations of local ordinances, statutes, regulations, or rules; law enforcement liability claims, including allegations related to supervision, training, and wrongful acts by public officials; and other liability claims involving government entities and officials. Manage school board liability claims, including allegations involving: discrimination or unfair treatment of students; failure to provide appropriate educational services; failure to protect students; wrongful acts affecting students or their families. Manage employment practices liability claims involving public entities and school boards, such as: wrongful termination; harassment and hostile work environment allegations; retaliation claims; violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and other employment-related laws. The ideal candicate will: analyze claim facts and identify key legal, liability, and coverage issues; review insurance policies to determine applicable coverage; coordinate and manage litigation strategy with defense counsel and other partners; communicate claim status, developments, and recommendations to policyholders, agents, and internal stakeholders; maintain accurate documentation and reporting in accordance with company guidelines and delegated authority; handle claims from inception through resolution while delivering a high level of customer service. All duties and responsibilities must be performed in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, company policies, and professional standards. Responsibilities
- Effectively evaluates and resolves coverage issues arising out of claims made against Public Entities, Law Enforcement Agencies and School Boards in order to maintain the highest professional customer service and technical standards, in a timely fashion and ensure that all deadlines are met.
- Investigate claims through telephone, written correspondence, and/or personal contact with claimants, attorneys, insureds, agents, witnesses and others having pertinent information.
- Effectively and efficiently present claims and claim trends to Claim and Underwriting Leadership to include discussion of coverage, liability assessment and ultimate exposure to the insured and company.
- Timely analyze information in order to effectively evaluate assigned claims to determine ultimate exposure to the insured and company.
- Effectively evaluate, negotiate and resolve claims within delegated authority utilizing the appropriate denials or releases.
- Effectively analyze claim in conjunction with policy to assess coverage availability and prepare appropriate coverage letters explaining coverage position to insureds/agents.
- Report on all cases going to trial on a timely basis and attend portions of trials when warranted or requested by management.
- Ensure proper referrals and timely updates to appropriate Reinsurer(s).
- Plans, reviews and conducts claims reviews and settlement conferences. Mediates complaints and disputes regarding claim resolution.
- Must be able to drive an automobile to travel within territory. Car travel represents approximately 0-10% of employee's time and a valid driver's license.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Requirements
- Experience handling Public Entity Professional Liability, Police Professional Liability, and Employment Practices Liability claims required;
- Ability to properly address exposure and adjust files and expenses;
- Ability to analyze claims presented, legal complaints, litigation reports and trend analysis to identify issues;
- Experience in complex coverage analysis and significant large loss evaluations;
- Superior communication, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills;
- Excellent presentation skills;
Moderate proficiency with standard business-related software (including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); Sufficient keyboarding proficiency to enter data accurately and efficiently; and Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
Education and Experience
- College degree required.
- Law degree or MBA preferred.
- 8+ Casualty claims handling experience (of those, a minimum of 5 years handling cases of a complex nature with a primary P&C carrier).
- Experience handling Public Entity Professional Liability, Police Professional Liability, and Employment Practices Liability claims required.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
Pay Range
USD $124,000.00 - USD $160,000.00 /Yr.
