Job Description

The System Engineer II reports to the Senior Manager, Software Engineer. The primary focus of this position is to administer the Salesforce.com environment ensuring users have access and training. The position will also assist in maintaining the customization portion of salesforce.com. Must understand basic system standardized tasks and will apply them under close supervision of management.

The Systems Engineer II - Atlassian Cloud Platform reports to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure Engineering. The primary focus of this position is to administer, support, and optimize the university's Atlassian Cloud Enterprise environment, ensuring users have appropriate access, training, and support. This position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing platform configurations, automations, integrations, and governance practices across Atlassian products including Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, and Atlassian Guard. The Systems Engineer II applies established technical standards and operational processes while contributing to platform improvements and enterprise initiatives under general supervision.

Job Duties

  • Performs system administration, configuration, maintenance, and support for Atlassian Cloud products, including Jira Software, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Atlassian Guard, and related applications.

  • Manages and performs Atlassian Cloud configuration, deployment, and platform administration activities, ensuring appropriate rollback, recovery, and change management procedures exist at all times.

  • Resolves Atlassian platform issues submitted through the university's ticketing systems and serves as an escalation point for complex platform-related issues.

  • Reviews platform configurations, workflows, automation rules, scripts, integrations, and Marketplace applications to ensure adherence to established standards, security requirements, and best practices.

  • Ensures appropriate backup, recovery, and continuity procedures are maintained in support of organizational disaster recovery requirements.

  • Creates and maintains documentation for Atlassian platform architecture, configurations, governance standards, policies, procedures, and operational processes.

  • Maintains development, testing, and production environments and supports feature releases, upgrades, migrations, and platform enhancements.

  • Maintains data integrity, security, and governance across Atlassian Cloud environments.

  • Administers Atlassian Guard, user lifecycle management, authentication, authorization, SSO, SCIM provisioning, and platform security controls.

  • Designs, implements, and maintains automation solutions that improve operational efficiency and reduce manual administrative effort.

  • Evaluates and manages Atlassian Marketplace applications and integrations, ensuring compliance with security, privacy, supportability, and operational standards.

  • Establishes and maintains governance standards for projects, workflows, permissions, configurations, automations, and data management.

  • Works closely with administrators, engineers, developers, product owners, and business stakeholders to resolve issues and improve platform capabilities.

  • Partners with business and technical teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and platform optimization.

  • Participates in and serves as a technical resource for Atlassian-related projects, integrations, cloud migrations, and platform initiatives.

  • Supports platform monitoring, incident response, problem management, root cause analysis, and operational health activities.

  • Participates in platform roadmap planning and evaluation of new Atlassian Cloud capabilities and features.

  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less experienced administrators and engineers.

  • Evaluates business requirements and recommends scalable, supportable solutions using native platform capabilities whenever possible.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Atlassian Cloud products, including Jira Software, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Atlassian Guard, and associated best practices.

  • Knowledge of enterprise identity and access management concepts, including SAML, SSO, MFA, SCIM provisioning, and governance controls.

  • Knowledge of platform administration, workflow management, service management, automation, and collaboration technologies.

  • Intermediate to advanced spreadsheet and data manipulation abilities.

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft 365 services, including Outlook, Teams, and Entra ID.

  • Ability to assist management with evaluating, selecting, implementing, and supporting Atlassian-related technologies and Marketplace applications.

  • Ability to serve as a technical resource for escalated platform issues.

  • Understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, automation frameworks, and enterprise integrations.

  • Knowledge of Jira workflows, permission schemes, automation rules, service management processes, and Confluence administration.

  • Understanding of Agile, Scrum, DevOps, and IT Service Management (ITSM) methodologies.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet schedules and deadlines.

  • Ability to keep management appropriately informed of platform activities and significant issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Three (3) years of experience administering enterprise collaboration, service management, or workflow automation platforms, including at least two (2) years supporting Atlassian Jira, Confluence, or Jira Service Management.

  • Experience configuring and administering workflows, permission schemes, notification schemes, screens, issue types, projects, spaces, forms, request types, queues, SLAs, and automation rules.

  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise cloud platforms.

  • Experience with Atlassian Guard, SAML/SSO authentication, SCIM user provisioning, and identity management integrations.

  • Experience implementing and supporting platform integrations using REST APIs, webhooks, and related technologies.

  • Experience with scripting, automation, or development technologies such as Forge, PowerShell, Python, Groovy, or similar tools.

  • Working knowledge of Agile, Scrum, DevOps, and IT Service Management (ITSM) practices.

  • Ability to evaluate business requirements and implement scalable, maintainable, and supportable technical solutions.

  • Equivalent relevant experience performing the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements. Generally, equivalent relevant experience is defined as one year of experience for one year of education and is at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Atlassian Certified Professional certifications, including Atlassian Administration, Jira Service Management, Atlassian Cloud, or related certifications.

  • Experience administering Atlassian Cloud Enterprise environments.

  • Experience administering Atlassian Guard and enterprise identity management integrations.

  • Experience implementing and supporting Jira Service Management in a large enterprise environment.

  • Experience with cloud migration, platform modernization, governance, and operational excellence initiatives.

  • Experience integrating Atlassian products with enterprise systems such as Microsoft 365, Entra ID, ServiceNow, CI/CD platforms, reporting tools, and other enterprise applications.

  • Systems administration experience.

  • Experience supporting higher education or other large, complex organizations.
